Fargo’s Salsa Fever

by VeloMagster

James Karrasch, a dedicated cyclist from Orcas Island, Washington, has transformed his 2020 Salsa Fargo into a versatile machine tailored for diverse terrains and adventures. His journey with the Fargo began in 2022 when he acquired the bike secondhand, and since then, it has undergone several upgrades to meet his evolving cycling needs.

Background and Cycling Experience

Originally from rural Pennsylvania, James relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 2019 after completing a cross-country road bike tour. This experience honed his endurance and mechanical skills, fostering a deep passion for cycling. Since then, he has engaged in various cycling disciplines, including road riding, gravel grinding, mountain biking, and bikepacking. Notably, in April 2026, he embarked on a 24-day journey along the Arizona Trail, showcasing his commitment to long-distance cycling adventures.

The Evolution of James’s Salsa Fargo

James’s Salsa Fargo, affectionately named “Large Marge,” has been meticulously customized to serve as an all-encompassing bikepacking rig. The initial configuration featured a 2020 Salsa Fargo frame, a carbon fork, and a 12-speed SRAM GX AXS groupset. Hydraulic brakes were added to enhance stopping power, and the original carbon Firestarter fork was replaced with a Fox Factory 32 fork for improved durability.

In preparation for the Arizona Trail expedition, James implemented further enhancements:

  • Suspension Upgrade: Swapped the Fox Factory 32 fork for a Marzocchi Bomber Z2, providing 120mm of travel to better handle the varied terrain of the Arizona Trail.

  • Dropper Post Addition: Installed a PNW Components Pine Dropper post, offering greater control on technical descents.

  • Wheel and Tire Configuration: Opted for 29 x 2.2 Teravail Sparwood tires for the journey, balancing speed and traction.

  • Drivetrain Compatibility: Replaced the stock dropouts with UDH-compatible ones to accommodate the GX Transmission groupset from his mountain bike, ensuring seamless gear transitions.

These modifications have collectively enhanced the Fargo’s performance, making it a reliable companion for both local rides and extensive bikepacking expeditions.

James’s current Salsa Fargo setup includes:

Reflections and Future Considerations

James’s experience with the Salsa Fargo underscores the bike’s adaptability and the importance of customization in achieving a personalized riding experience. He notes that the Fargo’s design, with its tall, upright geometry and numerous mounting options, makes it an excellent choice for bikepacking and mixed-terrain riding. However, he also expresses a desire for future iterations of the Fargo to feature a larger-diameter seat tube and internal dropper routing, enhancements that could further streamline the bike’s setup and performance.

In summary, James’s Salsa Fargo exemplifies the potential of a well-customized bike to meet the diverse demands of a dedicated cyclist. Through thoughtful upgrades and modifications, he has transformed his Fargo into a versatile and reliable companion for both local rides and extensive bikepacking adventures.
