WD99’s latest urban e-bike lineup, FLOW, introduces a revolutionary approach by eliminating traditional gear systems. This innovative design aims to simplify daily commuting and enhance the riding experience.
Crystal, Metro, and Fusion: Embracing Simplicity
The trio of models—Crystal, Metro, and Fusion—adopt a single-speed configuration with belt drives, removing the derailleur and gear shifters. This minimalist design reduces maintenance needs and potential points of failure, making them ideal for urban environments where routes are predictable, and the electric motor compensates for the lack of gears. Additionally, belt drives require no lubrication, preventing grease stains on clothing—a practical benefit for daily commuters.
Noa: Intelligent Gear Management
The Noa model retains a five-speed system but automates gear shifting through the Bafang RG E510.D electronic hub. This hub, developed specifically for e-bikes, weighs 2.3 kg and offers a maximum torque of 120 Nm, accommodating the higher demands of pedal-assist bicycles. The system monitors pedal force, cadence, and speed, integrating data from a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to determine optimal gear changes without rider intervention. This approach allows riders to focus solely on pedaling, enhancing the overall experience.
Two Approaches, One Goal
WD99’s design philosophy contrasts the simplicity of single-speed models with the versatility of automated gear systems. The single-speed models reduce mechanical complexity, while the automated system offers adaptability for varied terrains and conditions, all without adding complexity for the rider. As Michele Cappelli, WD99’s R&D manager, states, “On Crystal, Metro, and Fusion, simplicity means eliminating the gear system. On Noa, it means keeping five gears and having the bike manage them.”
A User-Centric Development Approach
WD99 emphasizes a development strategy that prioritizes user experience over component selection. Rather than starting with a catalog of parts, the company defines the rider’s needs and desired bike behavior first, then selects components accordingly. Cristina Simi, CEO of WD99, explains, “We want to decide who the bike is for, how it should behave, and what experience it should offer.” This approach ensures that all elements work cohesively, providing a seamless and intuitive riding experience.
The FLOW lineup embodies WD99’s commitment to innovation and user-centric design, offering e-bikes that simplify daily commuting while maintaining performance and adaptability.
