Bikeability Launches Online Course to Enhance Adult Cycling Confidence
In a significant move to bolster adult cycling proficiency, Bikeability has introduced an online e-learning course tailored for new and returning cyclists, including those opting for electric bikes or working in the delivery sector. This initiative aims to equip adults with the skills and confidence needed to navigate UK roads safely.
Course Overview
Developed by The Bikeability Trust and supported by London-based bike-sharing company Forest, the £7.99 CycleIn online course spans 90 minutes. It is designed to help participants ride confidently alongside traffic. The course aligns with the Highway Code and the National Standard for Cycle Training, covering essential topics such as:
- Road positioning
- Navigating junctions
- Route planning
- E-bike usage
- Cycling in urban environments
Accessible via phone, tablet, or laptop, the course allows learners to progress at their own pace.
Addressing the Confidence Gap
The launch of this e-learning course follows the release of The Bikeability Trust’s “Lost Generation” report, also sponsored by Forest. The report highlights that a significant portion of UK adults missed out on cycle training during their childhood, leading to a lack of confidence in cycling on today’s roads. It found that three-quarters of adults had not cycled at all in the past year, with only 36% cycling regularly for commuting. Additionally, women are notably more likely to feel nervous about riding in traffic or handling unexpected situations while cycling.
Expert Insights
Emily Cherry MBE, Chief Executive of The Bikeability Trust, commented:
“Many adults are locked out of cycling because they haven’t got road confidence. CycleIn changes that. Backed by The Bikeability Trust’s expertise, it gives people the knowledge they need to cycle on today’s roads safely. Cycling is one of the most affordable, healthy, and sustainable ways to travel, but confidence is key. With CycleIn, we’re making that confidence accessible to everyone.”
Corporate Engagement
CycleIn group licenses are available to assist employers in supporting the national Cycle to Work Scheme and reducing corporate carbon footprints, thereby supporting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals. The course is also positioned as an addition to employee benefits packages, promoting active commuting and workforce well-being.
