Lael Wilcox Embarks on Record-Breaking Adventure: 282 Miles on Day One

Lael Wilcox has kicked off her ambitious quest to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe by bicycle. On the first day of her journey, she covered an impressive 282 miles (454 km) as she sets her sights on an extraordinary goal: to ride more than 17,000 miles (28,565 km) across diverse terrains and climates.

Record Holder and New Goals

Wilcox, who holds the women’s record for this grueling feat—29,169 km (18,125 miles) in 108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes—aims to surpass Mark Beaumont’s overall record of 78 days, 14 hours, and 40 minutes, achieved in 2017. Lael’s starting point was Buckingham Fountain in Chicago, Illinois, where she started her ride at 4 AM on June 7.

For this journey, she plans to maintain an average of 231 miles (372 km) per day, which includes tackling transfers and rest periods. Remarkably, in her opening day, she rode with the support of her crew, treating herself to lasagne and meatballs along the way—fuel for the arduous journey ahead.

The Route Ahead

On her first day, Wilcox traveled from Chicago to Kleinke Park while passing through Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. As of day two, she has already clocked 353 miles (568 km) and is on her way toward the Canadian border. Cutting through regions with varying climates and landscapes, she will touch down in multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, Portugal, Spain, and beyond, covering major continents throughout the trip.

The Requirements to Break a Record

To qualify for this world record, cyclists must adhere to essential criteria:

  • Complete a minimum of 18,000 miles in one direction
  • Start and finish at the same location
  • Traverse at least two antipodal points on the Earth

“Today has been fantastic,” Wilcox reported in her podcast, recorded on the road just before reaching her first milestone. She described the favorable weather conditions and reflected on the overwhelming support from fans—over 100 individuals came to send her off and a similar number welcomed her at Kleinke Park.
