Frank Slevin, the Independent Chair of British Cycling since January 2018, has announced his decision to step down following a recent diagnosis of bowel cancer. This development comes after a period of significant transformation and growth within the organization.
During his tenure, Slevin played a pivotal role in guiding British Cycling through a time of necessary cultural and structural change. Under his leadership, the organization met or exceeded all recommendations from the Cycling Independent Review, a critical step in restoring confidence and setting higher standards across the sport. He championed enhancements to medical governance and athlete welfare, reinforcing the duty of care to riders competing at every level. Slevin also led the transformation of British Cycling’s regional structure, strengthening support for clubs, volunteers, and event organizers across the country. (cyclingweekly.com)
His decision to speak openly about his diagnosis was inspired by the courage of cycling great Sir Chris Hoy, with the hope that sharing this will contribute to greater awareness of bowel cancer, especially as incidence rates among younger people have been rising. (cyclingweekly.com)
Slevin expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Chair, stating, “It has been an incredible honour and privilege to have been afforded the opportunity to Chair the wonderful organisation that is British Cycling for the past eight years.” He also acknowledged the dedication of the staff and volunteers, noting their tireless efforts in serving members and partners. Jon Dutton, Chief Executive of British Cycling, praised Slevin’s leadership, describing him as “an exceptional Chair and a steadying force during one of the most pivotal periods in British Cycling’s history.” He highlighted Slevin’s unwavering dedication, commercial acumen, governance expertise, and passion for cycling, which have helped lay a stronger foundation for the organization’s future. Recruitment for a new independent chair will begin in earnest. Slevin will remain involved until a successor is appointed, including remaining on the boards of Grand Depart 2027 Ltd and British Cycling Ventures, as the streamlined time requirements of these roles make continued involvement possible during this period. The role of acting chair will be shared between Vice Chair Andy Cook and Senior Independent Chair James Davies on an interim basis. (cyclingweekly.com)
This transition marks the end of a significant chapter for British Cycling, as the organization continues to build on the foundations laid during Slevin’s leadership.
