Vogue Bike Takes the Reins: Freebike’s Transition in 2026

Freebike Ceases Operations; Vogue Bike Assumes Inventory and Orders

In a significant development within the e-bike industry, Dutch manufacturer Freebike has announced the cessation of its activities, effective June 1, 2026. The remaining stock and outstanding orders will be transferred to Vogue Bike, which will centralize operations at its new headquarters in Aalsmeer.

Transition Details

Freebike communicated this decision to its dealer network, following a comprehensive evaluation period. To ensure a seamless transition for dealers and customers, Freebike has entered into an agreement with Vogue Bike for the acquisition of existing inventory and the continued supply of bicycles and components. Processing of new and pending orders is set to resume from May 12, 2026.

Innovative Business Model

Established in 2018 by Maarten Akkers and Rob Beset, Freebike distinguished itself with a flexible business model. Customers could configure their e-bikes online or via a dealer’s configurator, with delivery occurring within a few days. This approach aimed to protect dealers from large inventories and price erosion due to online discounts.

Initially, Freebike collaborated with E-Wheels Studio in Roosendaal to facilitate rapid delivery times. After E-Wheels Studio’s bankruptcy in 2019, Freebike relocated production to Rosmalen, establishing its own facility complete with a warehouse and service workshop.

Strategic Partnerships

In subsequent years, Freebike formed a strategic partnership with the German-Chinese company New Cycle, the successor to Cycle Union GmbH. This collaboration, initiated in 2023, expanded Freebike’s distribution to include other bicycle brands such as Ebike Manufaktur and Kreidler.

Behind the scenes, shareholder dynamics shifted when investor Marcel Boekhoorn sold his shares in Freebike. This change brought ECC, the parent company of Vogue Bike, into a more prominent role. The partnership was evident at recent trade fairs, where Freebike was integrated into Vogue Bike’s exhibition stand.

Farewell to Rob Beset

The closure of Freebike also marks the departure of co-founder Rob Beset. A driving force behind the brand for many years, Beset faced health challenges in the autumn of 2025, leading him to focus entirely on his recovery.

This development reflects broader industry trends, with other companies like Paragon Machine Works and VOWAG also ceasing operations in 2026 due to market challenges. (bikemag.com)

As the e-bike market continues to evolve, the consolidation of operations and strategic partnerships, such as the one between Freebike and Vogue Bike, may become more prevalent.
