Rediscovering the Joy of Riding: E-MOUNTAINBIKE Magazine’s Latest Insights
In an era where technological advancements in e-mountain bikes (eMTBs) emerge at a relentless pace, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of new features and models. The recent release of the Avinox-Motor has already been succeeded by another “revolutionary” innovation, highlighting the industry’s rapid evolution. This pattern—new motor systems, smarter features, and the next big trend—raises a pertinent question: Is our current equipment still sufficient, or have we forgotten how to fully appreciate and utilize what we already possess?
As a publication dedicated to thorough comparisons, we pride ourselves on testing products rigorously. This approach allows us to distinguish between marketing promises and genuine differences, helping you identify the eMTB that best suits your riding style and needs.
The Paradox of Choice: Overanalyzing to the Point of Inaction
Many riders are familiar with the cycle of comparing, researching, and discussing every detail before making a decision. Platforms like ChatGPT and Google, along with online forums, become battlegrounds for the minutiae, all in the pursuit of certainty. This quest for the perfect choice can lead to analysis paralysis, where the fear of making the wrong decision prevents any decision at all. We find ourselves reading one more review, watching another video, or poring over another spec sheet. Meanwhile, others are out there, experiencing their first adventures, embracing the essence of riding.
Embracing the Ride: Lessons from Real-World Experiences
In this issue, we share the story of my father and his three best friends, all around 70 years old, who decided to spend a night outdoors. Their adventure wasn’t about epic expeditions or survival challenges. They mounted their eMTBs, grappled with modern tents, made more drink stops than the law allows over a mere five kilometers, and discovered that adventure doesn’t require perfect gear or months of preparation. The key takeaway is that comfort is often a matter of mindset.
Similarly, our editor Benedikt ventured to Canada’s North Shore, one of the world’s most legendary mountain biking regions. There, he met freeride legend Wade Simmons and an 86-year-old trail builder who still spends his days in the forest with shovel and wheelbarrow. The experience wasn’t about the most powerful motor or the latest geometry; it was about the realization that the best memories are made where garage doors are open, people share their time, and someone builds trails they might never ride again.
Navigating the Rapid Pace of Innovation
Our long-time editorial friend Erik set out to purchase a new bike, only to be confronted by the Eurobike exhibition and the next generation of motors, drivetrains, and futuristic visions. Suddenly, the question wasn’t about which bike was right, but whether purchasing one made sense at all. His commentary delves into this dilemma: What happens when innovations follow so quickly that anticipation is replaced by uncertainty? When high-quality sports equipment like eMTBs start to feel disposable?
The E-SUV Showdown: A Comprehensive Comparison
This issue also features our extensive E-SUV comparison test, featuring 13 of the most exciting models on the market. We’ve tested and analyzed every detail, debunking some bold marketing claims along the way. But we aimed for more than just raw data; we enlisted my mom, friends, and riders of varying skill levels to test the bikes, leading to surprising insights. Despite the presence of extremely strong contenders, we consciously decided not to crown a single winner. Why was this the right decision, and what do these bikes truly offer? Find out in the article!
Redefining the eMTB Experience: A Collaboration with MAHLE
Our project with MAHLE takes a different approach. Instead of asking which motor is the strongest or which spec sheet is most impressive, we flipped the question: What do we actually want to experience with a bike? The answer led to two dream bikes on the same platform, each embodying a different vision of what a good eMTB is. One is light, agile, and focused on riding fun; the other is ready for luggage, long days, and adventures without a fixed return time. Same frame, same motor, but two completely different ideas of what makes a great eMTB. Read the story!
ZEG’s Mission: From Bike Buyers to Bike Riders
The Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft (ZEG), which includes brands like Bulls, is tackling a different challenge. It’s not about selling more bikes but about turning bike buyers back into bike riders. A surprisingly simple idea and perhaps one of the most important tasks our industry faces today.
Final Thoughts: It’s Not About What You Have, But What You Do With It
This issue is packed with stories and comparison tests waiting to be discovered. If I were to conclude this editorial with one thought, it would be this: We can overthink, philosophize, and debate who has the best gear. In the end, it never matters what you have, but what you make of it.
In this spirit: Make the most of it! Enjoy reading—and even more, enjoy being out there.
Cheers,
Robin Schmitt
