Nicolette Jones has once again demonstrated her exceptional endurance and determination by becoming the first woman to complete the 2026 Colorado Trail Race (CTR), marking her third consecutive victory in this grueling event. She traversed the challenging 528-mile course in an impressive time of 4 days, 21 hours, and 45 minutes, securing sixth place overall.
The 27-year-old former soccer player entered the race in peak condition, having recently secured second place at the Highland Trail 550 in May. This performance served as an excellent fitness benchmark and preparation for the CTR. Throughout the race, Jones faced smoky and hot conditions but managed to finish 14 hours faster than her previous win in this direction in 2024, setting a new benchmark for women’s performance on the southwest route. However, due to the Willow Fire detour, this time will not count as an official record. The current women’s record remains Alexandera Houchin’s time of 6 days, 2 hours, and 33 minutes from 2022.
Jones’s choice of equipment played a significant role in her success. She relied on her Vassago Optimus Ti hardtail, a bike that has been her companion in all three CTR victories. This consistent selection underscores the importance of reliable gear in ultra-endurance events.
Beyond her achievements in the CTR, Jones has an impressive history with the Colorado Trail. She has previously toured, through-hiked, and even cross-country skied the trail in winter conditions. Notably, she holds the Fastest Known Time (FKT) heading northeast and is the only woman to have completed the trail in under five days in both directions. These accomplishments highlight her versatility and deep connection to the trail.
The 2026 CTR was not without its challenges. The race course was altered due to the Willow Fire, which led to significant rerouting. Despite these obstacles, Jones’s performance stands as a testament to her resilience and commitment to the sport.
In summary, Nicolette Jones’s third consecutive victory in the 2026 Colorado Trail Race not only solidifies her status as a leading figure in ultra-endurance cycling but also serves as an inspiration to athletes worldwide. Her dedication, preparation, and adaptability in the face of adversity exemplify the spirit of adventure and perseverance that define the cycling community.
