Embarking on the Via Francigena: A Cyclist’s Pilgrimage
After years of anticipation, the moment had finally arrived. The journey I had envisioned for so long was about to commence.
The Departure
Setting off from Turin, my bike was meticulously prepared, yet doubts lingered. Bags checked, GPS set, chain oiled—the usual pre-ride rituals. There’s always that moment before departure when you question your decision. But once on the saddle, doubts fade, replaced by the thrill of the ride. It’s a familiar feeling: standing still breeds hesitation; pedaling transforms uncertainty into possibility.
The Po Valley
The initial days unfolded across the flat, seemingly endless Po Valley. The landscape tested my endurance silently: straight roads, deserted paths, rice fields stretching endlessly. The scenery remained constant, but my mind was active, reflecting on the journey ahead. Pedaling became a meditative rhythm, the constant hum of wheels on gravel accompanying my thoughts.
The Apennines
Then came the challenge of the Apennines. The Passo della Cisa was unrelenting: long, steady, without shortcuts. The ascent was gradual, demanding patience. Muscles burned, breath shortened, thoughts simplified to reaching the next bend. Upon reaching the summit, the effort’s reward was evident. The air shifted, the view expanded, and the fatigue transformed into a profound sense of accomplishment.
Tuscany
From there, everything changed. The sea appeared, followed by Tuscany’s iconic white roads, cypress trees, and villages seemingly placed to invite pauses: Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena, Monteriggioni, Radicofani. The panoramas were vast, climbs brief yet steep, disrupting the rhythm, while descents brought spontaneous smiles. Here, the journey became pure beauty: tired legs, but eyes filled with wonder.
Lazio and the Final Push
In Acquapendente, I entered Lazio. The route had become familiar; the body knew its role even when the mind was weary. Passing through Viterbo, skirting Lake Bracciano, a sense of conclusion began to form. The final kilometers were peculiar: a desire to arrive, yet a reluctance for the journey to end.
Arrival in Rome
Then, unexpectedly, I arrived in Rome, the Eternal City. It welcomed me with its chaos, history, and grandeur. After countless kilometers of solitude and effort, standing before the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Altare della Patria felt surreal. I realized it wasn’t just a city; it was a symbol, a destination that encapsulated the entire journey.
It was arduous, intense, and magnificent. And when I stopped, placed my feet on the ground, and looked at how far I’d come, I understood one thing: every single kilometer was worth it.
And now? Now, thoughts turn to the next adventure.
