A Legacy of Innovation
The journey began over three decades ago when Anton Nijland crafted a custom tricycle for a local girl in need. This act sparked a series of requests, first locally and then nationwide, leading to the establishment of a specialist in adaptive mobility. Koen Nijland, the third-generation commercial director, reflects, “We ensure these individuals are mobile and give them a piece of joy in life. That makes it rewarding work.”
The Suelo: A Game-Changer in E-Mobility
The Suelo e-bike stands out with its exceptionally low step-through height of just 16 centimeters, a newly developed mid-drive motor system, and an innovative start-assist feature that combines comfort and safety for those who might otherwise lose confidence in traditional bicycles. (eurobike.com)
Strategic Growth and Commitment
While many in the cycling industry have pursued rapid expansion and external funding, Nijland Cycling has opted for a more measured approach. Koen emphasizes, “Our personal approach remains our core value. We take the time for people.” This philosophy extends both internally and externally, fostering strong loyalty among customers.
A Step Towards the Future
The Suelo marks the first model in a new design architecture that will form the basis for the next generation of Nijland models. By positioning the mid-drive motor further forward in the frame, additional space was created for a wide and safe step-through. Users can more easily mount and dismount, standing firmly with both feet on the ground when stationary. Luuk Nijland, focusing on product development and innovation, notes, “Take the target group of older adults. For them, stepping onto the bike can be really daunting, while there are so many possibilities. Always with the same goal: that smile from the end user.”
European Recognition for Local Philosophy
The Eurobike Award is one of the most prestigious innovation prizes within the international cycling industry. For Luuk and Koen, the recognition confirms a course set years ago. Koen adds, “We work a lot with long-term relationships. Also from that relationship with the customer, we receive feedback to improve our products and service.” Luuk concludes, “This award is very nice, but what drives us every day is the smile of the end user. As long as we make bikes that give people their freedom back, we are doing exactly what we should do.”
The Suelo is available through selected dealers for a consumer price of €4,490. Koen remarks, “We continue to invest in the future, and that gives energy.”
