Surly Sorceress: A Steel Trail Hardtail with Bikepacking Potential

Surly’s latest offering, the Sorceress, is a steel-framed hardtail mountain bike designed to seamlessly transition from aggressive trail riding to extended bikepacking adventures. This versatile bike features a 140mm suspension fork, with the option to extend to 150mm for more demanding descents. Its innovative DUH (Dropout Universal Hanger) system accommodates various drivetrain configurations, including UDH, Full-Mount, and singlespeed setups, while the frame is equipped with multiple mounts to support both rugged trail runs and bikepacking excursions. Frame and Geometry

Constructed from 4130 Chromoly steel, the Sorceress is available as both a frame and a complete bike. All sizes feature 29-inch wheels, except for the XS size, which comes with 27.5-inch wheels. The frame offers clearance for tires up to 2.6 inches wide and supports internally routed dropper posts. The geometry includes generous standover clearance, a 65º head tube angle, and a 75º seat tube angle, with a reach of 462.8mm on the medium size, making it well-suited for off-piste adventures. The short 429mm chainstay across sizes S–XL ensures a responsive and enjoyable ride. (bikeradar.com)

Drivetrain and Dropout System

A standout feature of the Sorceress is Surly’s DUH dropout system, which allows riders to switch between UDH, traditional derailleur hangers, and singlespeed configurations. In singlespeed mode, built-in tensioners help position the wheel and set chain tension, enhancing the bike’s adaptability and ease of maintenance. (bikeradar.com)
