Embarking on Slovenia’s Cycling Odyssey
In the heart of Europe lies Slovenia, a nation where undulating hills, verdant valleys, and a rich tapestry of cultural heritage converge to create a cyclist’s paradise. Our journey through this captivating land was not merely a ride; it was an immersion into experiences that began long before we mounted our bikes.
Our Collective Endeavour
We are a diverse group of cycling enthusiasts—ranging from seasoned professionals to eager novices—united by a shared passion for exploration and sustainability. In 2025, we founded the “Cicloteca” at the Aldo Moro Cultural Centre in San Salvo, Italy. This initiative serves as a communal space dedicated to promoting integration, inclusion, sustainability, and gender equality. Our mission is to advocate for sustainable mobility, contributing to environmental preservation and the well-being of our communities.
In our inaugural year, we engaged over 100 participants through workshops, public events, and our first crowdfunding campaign for bicycle donations. From September 14 to 18, 2025, we embarked on an Erasmus+ mobility project in Slovenia, aligning with the European Mobility Week. Our efforts were recently recognized by the Italian Erasmus+ Agency as a national best practice. Despite hailing from a lesser-known community, we are committed to being ambassadors of sustainable practices.
The Slovenian Expedition
Our two-wheeled adventure through Slovenia was nothing short of extraordinary. We traversed the Parenzana, a 130-kilometer cycling trail that follows the historic Trieste-Parenzo railway, weaving through Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Along the way, we connected with local institutions, associations, and citizens who share our dedication to a more sustainable world.
Through the undulating terrains, we gleaned invaluable life lessons:

- Embracing Challenges: Obstacles are opportunities to practice kindness.
- The Power of Smiles: A smile is universally contagious.
- Unity in Diversity: No one should be left behind.
- Resilience: It’s not about waiting for the storm to pass but learning to ride through the rain.
In February 2025, during the presentation of the Cicloteca project at the Aldo Moro Cultural Centre in San Salvo, none of us anticipated the profound journey that awaited us. We couldn’t have foreseen that, by the end of the following summer, we would embark on a two-wheeled adventure within the Erasmus+ sustainable mobility program. Yet, after meticulous preparations, the day to depart for Slovenia arrived.
Day One: The Departure
Our group of ten, each with unique backgrounds and varying levels of cycling experience, was united by a desire to challenge ourselves and share a unique experience. To kickstart our eco-friendly journey, we cycled to the Vasto-San Salvo station on a serene Sunday morning in September.
After the customary photo in our Cicloteca jerseys, we set off. With hearty snacks, lively conversations, and task delegations, time flew, and we arrived at the bustling Bologna station.
After checking into our bike-friendly hotel, we explored the city, pedaling through Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica of San Petronio, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Two Towers. We concluded the evening with a delightful dinner, tired yet brimming with enthusiasm.
Day Two: Crossing Borders
After a delicious breakfast at Forno Brisa, we returned to the station to board a train to Venezia Mestre. From there, we took another regional train to Trieste. From Trieste’s Porto dei Bersaglieri, we embarked on a ferry to Muggia, the last Italian municipality in Istria.
Crossing into Slovenia near Lazzaretto, we cycled through lush landscapes to reach Koper. After checking in, we enjoyed the historic center and local cuisine, visiting Tito Square and the Praetorian Palace.
Day Three: Engaging with Locals
At the Regional Development Centre of Koper (RRC Koper), we met Tilen Filipčič, the mobility center manager. He shared initiatives aimed at reducing car usage, enhancing cycling infrastructure, and improving public transport.
In the afternoon, we visited the VINAKOPER winery, sampled local wines, and, undeterred by the unpredictable weather, cycled to Izola along the Parenzana, relishing breathtaking views and moments of joy under the rain.
Day Four: Discovering Piran
We set off early towards Piran. After detours and climbs through vineyards, we reached the city and wandered through its narrow streets, arriving at Giuseppe Tartini Square. After a fresh seafood lunch, we cycled the Parenzana to Portorož, navigating tunnels and hilly landscapes.
Day Five: Return to Italy
We returned to Italy from Koper to Muggia, passing through tunnels, rural settlements, and authentic landscapes. The sun accompanied us, and upon reaching Trieste, we visited Piazza Unità d’Italia and other main attractions.
Day Six: Final Moments in Bologna
We spent the last morning in Bologna, reflecting on a journey that had touched our hearts. We bid farewell to the city, savoring tortellini in broth.
This experience underscored the importance of exchanging best practices to build a more aware and collaborative European network. We learned that shared effort makes the view magnificent, and that smiles and mutual support are essential.
As Slovenian cycling legend Tadej Pogačar aptly said, “Cycling is not just a sport; it’s a way of life that brings us together.”
