Shift Into Gear: Shimano’s GRX Gets an Upgrade!

by VeloMagster

Shimano has recently expanded its GRX RX810 12-speed gravel groupset, introducing shorter crank-arm lengths and larger chainring options to cater to a broader range of riders and terrains.

Shorter Crank-Arms for Enhanced Pedalling Efficiency

The new 160mm and 165mm crank-arm lengths complement the existing 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm options. Shorter cranks can improve pedalling efficiency and cadence, while reducing joint strain, making them particularly beneficial for long gravel rides and races. They also offer advantages for shorter riders and can enhance ground clearance on technical terrains. (bikeradar.com)

Larger Chainrings for Gravel Racers

To accommodate faster riders and those on flatter terrains, Shimano has added 44-tooth and 46-tooth chainring options. These larger chainrings enable more efficient spinning at higher speeds and reduce chain articulation, leading to smoother gear transitions. The new chainrings are compatible with both the GRX 800 and 600 series cranks. (bikeradar.com)

Competitive Landscape

While Shimano has introduced these updates, SRAM’s Red XPLR crankset and power meter already offer six crank-arm lengths, starting from 160mm and 165mm, and increasing in 2.5mm increments up to 175mm. (bikeradar.com)

These enhancements to the GRX RX810 groupset provide riders with more options to tailor their gravel bike setup to their specific needs, whether for improved pedalling efficiency, higher-speed performance, or better adaptability to various terrains.
