In August 2025, Costanza and Marco, a couple from Milan—an engineer and a photographer—embarked on a two-week bikepacking adventure across Rwanda. Both avid cyclists, they sought a unique experience that combined their passion for cycling with the rich cultural and natural landscapes of Africa.
Planning the Expedition
Having previously explored destinations like the Philippines, Costanza and Marco decided to tackle Rwanda in 2025. Their approach to trip planning involved meticulous research, integrating information from travel guides, Google Maps, Komoot, hotel websites, and online blogs. This comprehensive preparation allowed them to outline a route that minimized daily planning, enabling them to focus on the journey itself.
The Route and Experience
Their journey spanned approximately 670 km with an elevation gain of 11,800 meters, taking them through remote areas with minimal tourist presence. Traveling light with minimal gear, they found that the bicycle, a quiet and respectful mode of transport, allowed them to immerse themselves deeply in the local culture and environment.
Highlights of the Journey
Rwanda’s diverse landscapes offered a plethora of experiences:
-
Wildlife Encounters: They observed lions, zebras, giraffes, and elephants in their natural habitats.
-
Trekking Adventures: They trekked in search of chimpanzees and gorillas, encountering families of monkeys and a variety of bird species.
-
Cultural Immersion: They visited historical sites, including the royal palace, and enjoyed boat safaris amidst rich biodiversity.
One memorable day combined a 17 km trek in search of chimpanzees with an 80 km bike ride, ascending 1,500 meters. This blend of activities kept them constantly engaged and energized.
Culinary Experience
As a vegan, Costanza found that local cuisine, rich in rice, potatoes, and beans, provided ample energy for their physically demanding journey. The simplicity and freshness of the food complemented their active lifestyle.
Engagement with the Cycling Community
During their travels, they visited the Rwanda National Cycling Center, where they had the opportunity to meet national athletes and even share a portion of the road with them. This visit was particularly poignant as Rwanda hosted the World Cycling Championships in September 2025. Witnessing the athletes on television after their visit added a personal connection to the event.
Conclusion
Costanza and Marco’s journey through Rwanda was a testament to the power of cycling as a means of cultural exploration and personal growth. Their adventure not only showcased the natural beauty and cultural richness of Rwanda but also highlighted the profound experiences that can be gained through thoughtful planning and an open heart.
Their story serves as an inspiration for cyclists seeking to explore new terrains and cultures, emphasizing the importance of preparation, respect for local communities, and the joy of discovery that comes with every pedal stroke.
