Revolutionary Spoke Tech: Partington, Sapim & Gulo Unite!

by VeloMagster

At the 2026 Sea Otter Classic, several companies unveiled innovative composite spoke technologies aimed at enhancing wheel performance:

Sapim RC-1 Flexible Spoke

Belgian spoke manufacturer Sapim introduced the RC-1, a composite spoke developed in collaboration with Applied Fiber. This spoke is pre-tensioned, ensuring it won’t stretch over time. Weighing 1.9g for a 260mm length, it’s lighter than traditional steel spokes and offers improved vertical compliance for a smoother ride. Currently, Sapim plans to produce these spokes in-house in Belgium, primarily for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). (bikerumor.com)

Partington’s R-Series with Continuous Carbon Fiber Spokes

Australian wheel manufacturer Partington showcased their new R-Series wheels featuring continuous carbon fiber spokes. These spokes form a loop extending the length of the spoke with eight layers, allowing for adjustable tension via an eccentric pin at the hub. This design aims to provide the benefits of carbon spokes while allowing for fine-tuning and replacement if necessary. The R-Series wheels are set to launch on June 1, with pricing expected to be premium. (bikerumor.com)

Gulo’s Straight Pull Braided Carbon Spokes

North Carolina-based Gulo introduced straight pull braided carbon spokes compatible with any carbon spoke-compatible hub, such as those from Industry Nine. These spokes utilize triaxially braided carbon with an additional proprietary material, offering 900lbs of pull strength and an 8% reduction in vibration. Gulo’s wheels, featuring these spokes, are priced between $2,295 and $2,695, with the GMX SL XC wheel weighing as light as 1,035g. (bikerumor.com)

These advancements in composite spoke technology reflect a growing trend in the cycling industry towards lighter, stronger, and more durable wheel components.
