Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness
In late May 2026, a hiker experienced a 200-foot slide at Buckskin Pass in Colorado’s Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. The incident occurred on May 30, 2026, at approximately 2:00 PM, when the hiker slipped at an elevation of around 11,300 feet. The individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly rescued by Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA). The rescue operation involved three field teams, totaling 12 members, who reached the hiker’s location about 3.5 miles from the trailhead. After conducting a medical assessment and stabilizing the injury, the hiker was safely evacuated from the mountain in under three hours and transported by ambulance to Aspen Valley Hospital.
Buckskin Pass is a high-alpine, strenuous trail situated at an elevation of 12,400 feet within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. It is part of the Four Pass Loop, a 26-mile circuit renowned for its panoramic views of the Maroon Bells, Snowmass Lake, and surrounding 14,000-foot peaks. The total circuit climbs over four mountain passes at elevations above 12,000 feet. According to the U.S. Forest Service, deep snow can persist on the passes until late in the summer. This incident serves as a stark reminder that even in late spring, winter conditions can persist at high elevations where snow remains. Hikers are advised to come equipped with microspikes and an ice axe, and to be prepared to turn back if conditions are unsafe. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of being prepared for potential injuries in technical terrain, dressing appropriately for changing mountain conditions, bringing technical gear suitable for the route, and carrying a two-way satellite communication device when traveling in remote areas where cell service may be unavailable.
