Muc-Off, the renowned cycling maintenance brand, has unveiled its latest innovation: the Dark Energy Chain Wax. This advanced dropper wax is meticulously engineered to strike the perfect balance between efficiency, durability, and minimal wear, ensuring a clean, fast, and quiet drivetrain that performs consistently ride after ride.

Developed over four years of dedicated research and development, Dark Energy Chain Wax is the culmination of extensive testing and collaboration with professional cycling teams. Muc-Off’s in-house R&D lab, in conjunction with pro-team riders and performance staff, evaluated over 90 formulations through rigorous screening processes. This comprehensive approach included more than 8,500 hours of dynamometer and tribometer testing, as well as over 100,000 kilometers of real-world testing by their in-house test team and professional teams.

The primary objective was clear yet challenging: to create a dropper wax that excels in efficiency, durability, and low wear. Achieving this trifecta required Muc-Off to leverage their in-house formulation chemistry, tribology, and performance engineering expertise. The result is a product that not only meets but exceeds the demands of modern cycling.

Inside the Muc-Off lab, formulations underwent tribological screening set to independent ASTM standards, benchmarking the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear properties consistently across formulations. High-performing candidates progressed to dynamometer efficiency testing in both clean and contaminated states over extended periods. Wear was quantified using Muc-Off’s white-light interferometry equipment, enabling high-resolution 3D surface profiling to measure microscopic wear scars with precision. This equipment, capable of measuring down to 0.1 of a micron (700 times smaller than the thickness of a human hair), is mounted on an active air isolation table to reduce micro-vibrations, ensuring the highest level of accurate and repeatable results under controlled conditions.

Laboratory data alone were insufficient; real-world performance was paramount. Once a formula proved itself in the lab, Muc-Off’s in-house testers subjected it to various weather conditions and terrains. The final stage involved close collaboration with their roster of pro-racers, creating a continuous feedback loop. Performance directors, mechanics, and riders from teams such as EF Pro Cycling, Decathlon CMA CGM, Commencal // Muc-Off, and Specialized Factory Racing provided structured feedback, directly shaping formulation refinements throughout development. This iterative process, spanning four years, underscores Muc-Off’s commitment to excellence.

Dark Energy Chain Wax has already demonstrated its prowess at the World Tour level, notably supporting Naomi Rüegg’s victory at the Tour Down Under in January, validating its performance under race pressure. To further substantiate these findings, Dark Energy’s efficiency and friction performance were assessed by independent tester Robert Khünen in Germany. Independent wear and CoF testing were also completed by ESR Technology—the UK’s national centre of tribology. Both third-party testing houses corroborated the results generated within Muc-Off’s in-house R&D facility.

Alex Trimnell, CEO at Muc-Off, commented, “Dark Energy represents the most complete balance we’ve achieved between efficiency, durability, and wear. Hitting one of those metrics is difficult. Delivering all three consistently is significantly harder. This product reflects years of dedication to building our unique in-house chemistry, tribology, and performance engineering capabilities—and our commitment to measurable, repeatable testing protocols at the highest level of the sport.”

Dark Energy Chain Wax is PFAS and PTFE-free and contains plant-derived, inherently biodegradable wax, aligning with Muc-Off’s commitment to environmentally friendly products. Alongside Dark Energy, Muc-Off is also introducing Chain Wax Cleaner. Developed specifically for wax-based drivetrains, this formula removes factory grease, residual oils, and old wax build-up without leaving contaminants that compromise adhesion. Designed for initial preparation and re-wax cycles, it helps maintain consistent bond strength between wax and chain—critical to sustaining long-term performance.

Dark Energy Chain Wax is available in 50ml and 120ml formats, priced at £15/€20/$18 (50ml) and £23/€30/$25 (120ml). Chain Wax Cleaner 500ml is priced at £22/€25/$25.

For cyclists seeking a high-performance, environmentally conscious chain lubricant, Muc-Off’s Dark Energy Chain Wax offers a compelling solution, combining cutting-edge technology with a commitment to sustainability.
