Johannesen had successfully reached the 8,485-meter summit of Makalu on May 9, 2026, alongside her partner, David Ashley, and two Nepali guides, Tawa Sherpa and Phurba Sonam Sherpa. The team had been operating under the banner of Dash Adventures, a U.S.-based expedition company founded by Johannesen and Ashley in 2018. Their approach focused on personalized, small-scale expeditions, emphasizing the motto “climbing mountains and making friends.” (tetongravity.com)

The avalanche occurred during the team’s descent, approximately 7,000 meters below Camp 3, where a section of fixed rope gave way, triggering the slide. While Johannesen and Ashley were caught in the avalanche, both survived the initial impact. Ashley, who was also injured, managed to stay with Johannesen until rescue teams arrived. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, Johannesen succumbed to her injuries at the scene. (explorersweb.com)

Following the incident, rescue operations were launched to evacuate the injured climbers. Ashley and Tawa Sherpa were airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment, where their conditions were reported as stable. Johannesen’s body was recovered from the avalanche site and transported to Kathmandu for post-mortem examination. (thetourismtimes.com)

This tragic event underscores the inherent risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering. Makalu, standing at 8,485 meters, is renowned for its technical challenges and unpredictable weather conditions, making it a formidable ascent even for seasoned climbers. Johannesen’s passing is a poignant reminder of the dangers that persist in the pursuit of mountaineering adventures.

In the wake of this tragedy, the mountaineering community has expressed condolences and support for Johannesen’s family and the Dash Adventures team. Her legacy as a passionate climber and dedicated guide continues to inspire those who knew her and those who shared in her love for the mountains.
