In a significant development for UK cycling enthusiasts, Channel 5 has secured a multi-year agreement with TNT Sports, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery, to broadcast exclusive free-to-air highlights of the Tour de France. This partnership marks a pivotal shift in the UK’s cycling broadcasting landscape, especially following the conclusion of ITV’s coverage in 2025.

A New Era for UK Cycling Coverage

The 2026 Tour de France is set to commence in Barcelona on July 4, and Channel 5’s daily highlight show will air at 7 pm throughout July. Sports presenter and journalist Rebecca Charlton will lead the coverage, bringing her expertise to the forefront of the sport. Reemah Sakaan, president of Channel 5, expressed enthusiasm about the channel becoming the new free-to-air home of cycling in the UK.

Expanding the Cycling Portfolio

Beyond the Tour de France, the agreement between TNT Sports and Channel 5 encompasses highlights of all three men’s Grand Tours. Following the 2026 Tour de France, Channel 5 will broadcast highlights of the 2026 Vuelta a España and the 2027 Giro d’Italia. Additionally, Channel 5 will air highlights of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, further broadening its cycling coverage.

Commitment to Cycling’s Growth

Scott Young, executive vice president of Warner Bros. Discovery Sport, highlighted the significance of this partnership in expanding the reach of elite cycling across the UK. He emphasized the commitment to bringing fans closer to the biggest races in both men’s and women’s cycling, ensuring that more viewers can experience the drama and storytelling that define Grand Tour racing.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The collaboration also sets the stage for live coverage of the 2027 Tour de France on Channel 5. Notably, the Grand Départ of both the men’s and women’s races is scheduled to take place in the UK, with stages held across Scotland, England, and Wales. Paul Bush OBE, Grand Départ GB managing director, expressed the desire to bring the 2027 Grand Départs to as wide an audience as possible, making the free-to-air coverage a significant step in building excitement for the event.

This landmark deal between TNT Sports and Channel 5 signifies a new chapter in the UK’s cycling broadcasting, offering fans comprehensive and accessible coverage of the sport’s most prestigious events.
