At the 2026 Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a prototype of Orbea’s latest aero bike was unveiled, showcasing significant design enhancements over its predecessor. This model, likely an evolution of the Orca Aero, features several notable modifications aimed at improving performance and aerodynamics.
Design Innovations
Hand-drawn markings on the prototype frame highlight areas of modification, with the head tube and fork design being particularly prominent. The fork crown now arches more widely over the tire, and the underside of the down tube is cut away, both suggesting increased tire clearance. The fork blades have been deepened and extended forward of the front axle, likely to manipulate airflow more effectively before it engages with the rest of the bike. The seatpost has also been redesigned, now more neatly integrated into the frame and narrower than previous versions. Additionally, a protrusion extends backward from the bottom bracket towards the leading edge of the rear tire, potentially serving to improve airflow.
Componentry and Specifications
The prototype is equipped with 29mm Vittoria Corsa Pro Speed tires mounted to Oquo wheels with a 23mm-wide internal diameter. This setup indicates a marked increase in tire clearance compared to the previous Orca Aero model. The bike is fitted with Shimano Dura-Ace pedals and bottle cages, and 57mm-deep Oquo RA57LTD carbon-spoked wheels. In its current configuration, the bike weighs 7.68kg in a size 55cm frame. Team mechanics anticipate further weight reduction as the setup is finalized.
Regulatory Considerations
The current Orca Aero features the ability to install a storage box in front of the bottom bracket area. This is outlawed by UCI regulations but legal in triathlon competition; however, mounting points remain in this area. The prototype, marked ‘Prototype 011’ and belonging to French rider Baptiste Veistroffer, has had the bolts for this accessory removed, indicating compliance with UCI regulations.
These developments underscore Orbea’s commitment to innovation and performance, with the new aero bike poised to make a significant impact in upcoming races.
