Duke Racing Wheels has unveiled its inaugural 32-inch wheelsets, the Lucky Jack SLS5 and Sierra 42, tailored for cross-country and gravel disciplines, respectively. These wheels are engineered from the ground up to harness the advantages of the larger diameter, rather than merely scaling up existing 29-inch or 700c designs. This approach acknowledges the distinct dynamics of 32-inch wheels, including increased leverage on the rim, heightened inertia, and altered spoke angles. (bikeradar.com)
Lucky Jack SLS5 32-inch
The Lucky Jack SLS5 is Duke’s cross-country wheelset, which has already demonstrated its prowess with a prototype clinching a stage victory at the Cape Epic under Felix Stehli. The rim is crafted using Duke’s SLS5 manufacturing process, resulting in a 10% reduction in weight compared to previous generations, enhanced vertical compliance, improved impact resistance, and superior vibration damping. The hookless rim features moulded spoke holes and a varnish-free finish. Available in three variants, two with a 31mm internal width (weighing 360g and 400g) and one with a 29mm internal width (weighing 410g), the latter incorporates Duke’s AntiPinch rim edge to minimize puncture risks. Duke recommends pairing a lighter front rim with the 410g rear. In its lightest configuration, using Duke’s hubs and Sapim spokes, the full wheelset weighs approximately 1,233g, with a tolerance of ±30g. The recommended tyre width ranges from 2.2 to 2.4 inches, aligning with modern cross-country standards. (bikeradar.com)
Sierra 42 32-inch
The Sierra 42 is Duke’s gravel wheelset, designed to offer the rollover benefits of a larger wheel while maintaining the performance characteristics of gravel riding. Constructed from Toray T1100 carbon fibre using Duke’s SLR5 process, the rim achieves up to a 23% weight reduction compared to its predecessor. The 42mm deep, 28mm internal width rim features a hooked profile suitable for road and gravel tyre pressures. Duke quotes a starting weight of 1,270g for complete pairs and recommends tyre widths between 40mm and 2.2 inches. (bikeradar.com)
Both wheelsets are available with various hub options, including DT Swiss 370 CL SP and Chris King R45 CL hubs, with prices starting at €1,559 for the Lucky Jack SLS5 and €1,659 for the Sierra 42. Rims can also be purchased separately, priced at €607 and €649, respectively. (bikeradar.com)
The introduction of 32-inch wheels marks a significant evolution in cycling, offering enhanced rollover capabilities and improved traction. Duke’s commitment to developing wheels specifically for this size underscores the industry’s recognition of its potential benefits. As the 32-inch wheel ecosystem continues to expand, riders can anticipate a broader selection of compatible components and bikes, further solidifying this wheel size’s place in the cycling landscape.
