CYCLING-MOUNTAIN BIKE-WORLD-SUIVictor Koretzky: A Champion’s Resilience and Return
After a challenging period marked by a significant injury, French mountain biking star Victor Koretzky is poised to defend his Cross-Country Short Track (XCC) title at the 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy.
A Triumphant Comeback
Over four months ago, Koretzky suffered a severe humeral fracture, necessitating two surgical interventions. The first procedure addressed the initial break, while a subsequent operation removed a bothersome screw from his humeral head. “Since the second surgery, I’ve made significant progress and feel much more comfortable on the bike,” Koretzky shared.
Physical Readiness and Mental Fortitude
Koretzky’s physical condition is commendable. “I’m in excellent shape, having trained hard for months,” he stated. The absence of an official return date posed mental challenges, but with unwavering determination and the support of his Specialized team, Koretzky remains focused on his goals.
Strategic Race Participation
While he had to forgo the Les Gets event to fine-tune his preparation, Koretzky is set to compete in the XCC at Val di Sole. “Defending my rainbow jersey in the XCC is the concrete goal I’ve set since my fall,” he affirmed. The XCC’s short, intense format aligns well with his strengths, and he is eager to showcase his abilities.
Cautious Approach to XCO
Regarding the Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) event, Koretzky remains cautious. “For the XCO, it’s realistic to say it might be complicated,” he acknowledged. He plans to assess his readiness through reconnaissance and training, aiming for a full recovery by the American tour later in the season.
Looking Ahead
As the 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships unfold from August 26 to 30, all eyes will be on Koretzky’s performance. His journey from injury to potential title defense exemplifies resilience and dedication, inspiring fans and fellow athletes alike.
