Redefining Gravel: The Argon 18 Anti Matter Revolution

by VeloMagster

Argon 18 has unveiled the Anti Matter, a groundbreaking gravel bike that redefines performance with its integration of massive tyre clearance, significant aerodynamic enhancements, and seamless luggage integration. This innovative model is poised to set new standards in the gravel racing arena.

Aerodynamic Advancements

The Anti Matter’s design is a testament to Argon 18’s commitment to speed and efficiency. Through extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel testing, the bike achieves a 14.5-watt advantage over its predecessor, the Dark Matter, at a wind-averaged drag of 45 km/h. This improvement is attributed to the bike’s integrated system, which harmoniously combines the frameset with component parts, optimises airflow, and refines the rider’s position. The result is a machine that offers superior speed without compromising stability.

Generous Tyre Clearance

Designed to tackle diverse terrains, the Anti Matter boasts generous tyre clearance, accommodating up to 55mm tyres. This feature ensures enhanced grip and comfort across various surfaces, from rugged trails to smooth tarmac. The low-dropped stays, featuring a horizontal junction to the seat tube, not only contribute to the bike’s aerodynamic efficiency but also provide increased compliance, absorbing shocks and vibrations for a smoother ride.

Integrated Luggage System

Understanding the needs of gravel racers, Argon 18 has incorporated an integrated luggage system into the Anti Matter. The co-developed ATTEN x Apidura frame bags are designed to carry race essentials without introducing aerodynamic penalties. Additionally, the bottle cages have been aerodynamically optimized, featuring a flush-fitting design shielded by the down tube shape. The side-loading down tube cage allows for easy access, even when the bike is equipped with the frame storage bag.

Frame and Componentry

The Anti Matter’s frame is engineered with a T47 threaded bottom bracket, UDH dropout, and a CeramicSpeed SLT headset, all built around a standard 1-1/8-inch round steerer tube. This design choice simplifies servicing and opens the door for compatibility with various gravel suspension forks. The bike is available in three models, each equipped with SRAM XPLR AXS drivetrains:

  • Top-Tier Model: Features a SRAM Red XPLR AXS groupset, Zipp 303 XPLR SW wheels, a power-meter equipped crankset, Schwalbe G-One RS Pro 45mm tyres, and the ATTEN x Apidura frame bag. Priced at £10,495 / $12,999 / €12,495.

  • Mid-Tier Model: Equipped with a SRAM Force XPLR AXS groupset, Zipp 303 XPLR S wheels, a power-meter equipped crankset, Schwalbe G-One RS Pro 45mm tyres, and the ATTEN x Apidura frame bag. Priced at £7,495 / $8,999 / €8,995.

  • Entry-Level Model: Comes with a SRAM Rival XPLR AXS groupset, DT Swiss G1800 alloy gravel wheels, and the ATTEN x Apidura frame bag. Priced at £5,495 / $6,499 / €6,795.

Argon 18’s Anti Matter is a testament to the brand’s dedication to innovation, offering a gravel bike that seamlessly blends speed, comfort, and practicality. With its aerodynamic design, generous tyre clearance, and integrated luggage system, the Anti Matter is set to elevate the gravel racing experience to new heights.
