Mike Vaughan Cycles

In the heart of Kenilworth, Warwickshire, Mike Vaughan Cycles stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of independent bike shops. Celebrating over six decades of service, this family-run establishment has been a cornerstone of the local cycling community since 1961.

A Legacy of Passion and Expertise

The journey began in the late 1950s when the Vaughan family operated several shops across Leamington and Warwick, including a prominent department store on Swan Street in Warwick. In 1957, Joseph Vaughan, Mike’s grandfather, acquired the current premises in Kenilworth, initially operating as a small department store selling bikes, toys, and mopeds. By 1961, the business had evolved into a dedicated bicycle shop, with Mike Vaughan’s father taking the helm. Mike himself grew up above the shop, immersing himself in the world of cycling from a young age. Today, Mike Vaughan Cycles remains a third-generation, family-run independent bike shop, run by Mike and his sister Nicky. The shop continues to serve both local riders and customers traveling from afar for specialist bikes, servicing, and bike fitting, all while maintaining its core values of honest advice, excellent service, and long-term relationships with customers. Community Engagement and Support

Beyond its retail operations, Mike Vaughan Cycles is deeply embedded in the local community. During the Christmas period, the shop collaborated with local schools, donating children’s bikes to raffles that supported their PTAs and wider school activities. This initiative was not about marketing the business but about fostering community spirit and encouraging cycling among younger generations. The genuine appreciation from schools, parents, and children underscored the shop’s commitment to its community.

A Dedicated and Experienced Team

The shop boasts a small yet highly experienced team, many of whom have been involved in cycling for most of their lives. As an independent bike shop, everyone tends to wear multiple hats day to day, creating a more personal experience for customers. Mike and Nicky Vaughan are the owners and remain heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the shop. Jamie grew up in a bike shop environment, with his dad and uncle having run Ride in Coventry for many years, while his grandfather was a multiple cyclocross champion. Russell previously owned Cycle Studio in Stratford-upon-Avon before selling the business and spending several years working for Shand Cycles, prior to recently joining the workshop team. Ethan is a highly promising downhill mountain bike rider currently competing for the Contect Ridewear team. Together, they handle everything from everyday servicing and repairs to electronic diagnostics, custom bike builds, and high-end road and e-bike work. Mike C focuses on marketing, social media, and sales, helping grow the shop’s presence both locally and further afield. Harrison is the apprentice mechanic and supports on the shop floor with sales and customer service.

A Personalised Customer Experience

When customers step into Mike Vaughan Cycles, they are greeted by genuine cyclists who understand the products and genuinely want to help them find the right solution, even if that sometimes means advising against a purchase. The shop’s independence allows for real long-term relationships with customers, whether they’re purchasing a child’s first bike or a high-end performance road bike. The welcoming atmosphere, honest advice, and long-term support are what truly set independent bike shops apart.

Adapting to Industry Changes

The cycling industry has seen significant shifts in recent years, with rising operational costs, increased online competition, and a heavily discount-driven market following Covid. Modern bikes, particularly e-bikes and high-end road bikes, have become more technical, requiring major investment in workshop tooling, software, and ongoing staff training. E-bike diagnostics and fault finding can often involve significant workshop time, from software updates and manufacturer liaison to detailed testing and repeat diagnostics. As an industry, labour pricing has not fully caught up with the true time these repairs can require, meaning independent shops often absorb additional time and costs themselves. To adapt, Mike Vaughan Cycles has focused on experience, service quality, and specialist knowledge, investing in workshop capability, premium brands, demo events, and customer support, while also putting more emphasis on marketing, social media, and community engagement. The shop believes that the strength of an independent bike shop lies in trust, relationships, and aftercare.

The Role of Independent Bike Shops

Independent bike shops are often the first step into cycling for many people. They help riders choose the right bike, the right size, and the right setup, while providing the servicing, advice, and long-term support that keeps people riding for years afterward. Mike Vaughan Cycles sees itself as more than just a retail business; after more than 60 years in Kenilworth, the shop is a genuine community asset. It supports local schools, events, clubs, and charity initiatives because independent bike shops help create and maintain local cycling culture. Supporting independent retailers means recognizing the value they bring beyond simply processing sales. Once local bike shops disappear, the industry loses expertise, accessibility, aftercare, and an important connection to local communities. Ultimately, independent bike shops are often the people introducing the next generation to cycling and keeping existing riders engaged in the sport. That role within the cycling ecosystem deserves protecting.

Looking Ahead

Mike Vaughan Cycles is excited about continuing to evolve the business. A significant recent development has been taking on Pinarello as a third premium brand alongside Trek and Specialized. This addition gives customers access to three of the most respected brands in cycling, each with its own strengths and identity. The shop is also excited to have a settled and highly motivated team in place, allowing for a focus on moving the business forward, improving customer experience, and investing properly in the future of the shop. There is a growing sense of confidence returning within the cycling industry after a difficult few years, with more enthusiasm around events, commuting, group riding, and premium products. Looking ahead to 2027 and beyond, Mike Vaughan Cycles plans further investment into the workshop
