The cycling industry is gearing up for the Life Time Sea Otter Classic, set to take place at the Laguna Seca Raceway from April 16 to 19, 2026. This annual event serves as a pivotal platform for families to engage in activities, initiatives, and incentives aimed at inspiring the next generation of cyclists. This year, the Sea Otter Classic is placing a significant emphasis on how brands are actively working to get more children on bikes, thereby supporting the long-term growth of the cycling industry.
A recent study by SHIFT Active Media’s Rider Research Hub, titled “Hooked: The Journey to Being an Enthusiast,” reveals compelling insights into the importance of early cycling experiences. The study found that 84% of cyclists began riding as children, and 71% of adult cycling enthusiasts had previously participated in other sports during their youth. These findings underscore the critical role that early exposure to cycling plays in fostering lifelong engagement with the sport.
Doug Baker, Chief Strategy Officer at SHIFT Active Media, commented on the study’s findings:
“What’s clear is that in addition to better, safer infrastructure, riding a bike as a child is a key predictor of riding later in life. And we believe that riding can be a great complement to other sports and physical activities in children’s lives. Organizations getting more kids on bikes are incredibly important to the future of cycling and young people’s long-term health.”
In line with these insights, several initiatives are being launched to encourage youth participation in cycling:
-
Sea Otter Classic Foundation’s Bike Skills and Safety School Assemblies Program: Celebrating 15 years, this program is set to visit 16 schools and three National Interscholastic Cycling Associations. Professional mountain bike rider Jeff Lenosky will be promoting cycling as a lifelong healthy habit.
-
Outride’s “Brains on Bikes” Activation: A non-profit organization initially founded by Specialized, Outride will host an activation at their booth to demonstrate the positive effects of cycling on cognitive brain function. Their “Riding for Focus” program aims to improve the mental and social well-being of middle school students.
-
Junior Gravel National Series: In partnership with USA Cycling, the Sea Otter Classic is bringing back the Junior Gravel National Series, providing a platform for children aged 15-18 to engage in racing from an early age, with the goal of inspiring more youth and families to discover the joy of cycling.
-
All Kids Bike Kindergarten PE Learn-to-Ride Program: Supported by the Life Time Foundation, the Ford Bronco Wild Fund, and Your California Ford Dealers, this program is being implemented in two local schools as part of the Sea Otter Classic. It introduces children to cycling during their kindergarten physical education classes, providing schools with bikes, helmets, and teacher training to help every child build confidence and develop lifelong riding skills.
The Life Time Sea Otter Classic extends beyond industry connections and elite racing by offering free admission to children under 12 throughout the festival. The event features a variety of activities, including strider riding, junior racing, egg hunts, and the Little Bellas all-girls camp. The festival’s schedule is designed to inspire the next generation and contribute to the long-term growth of the cycling industry.
