Exploring the TOFOLA Project: Reviving Adriatic Traditions through Sustainable Tourism

The TOFOLA project, an acronym for “Tourism in the Forest and Green Lagoons of the Adriatic through Historical Wooden Boats,” is an ambitious European initiative aimed at revitalizing the Adriatic region’s rich maritime heritage. By intertwining sustainable tourism with historical exploration, TOFOLA seeks to offer travelers a unique journey from the mountains to the sea, all at a leisurely pace.

A Glimpse into the Adriatic’s Maritime Legacy

Originating in March 2024 and slated for completion in August 2026, TOFOLA spans several Italian provinces, including Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, and Puglia. The project’s primary focus is to promote lesser-known destinations, making them accessible and enjoyable for a broader audience. This initiative is co-financed by the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021-2027 program, emphasizing the shared historical and cultural ties between the two nations, particularly their shipbuilding traditions during the era of the Serenissima Republic of Venice. Collaborative Efforts and Key Partnerships

TOFOLA brings together a diverse consortium of partners:

  • Centro Consorzi: Serving as the lead partner, Centro Consorzi plays a pivotal role in coordinating the project’s activities.

  • Veneto Agricoltura: This agency contributes its expertise in primary sector innovation, focusing on sustainable practices.

  • Legno Servizi Forestry Cluster FVG: Specializing in forestry services, this partner ensures the project’s alignment with environmental sustainability.

  • Istrian Development Agency (IDA): Representing Croatia, IDA facilitates cross-border collaboration and promotes regional development.

  • Marservis Ltd: This Croatian company offers insights into maritime services, enriching the project’s nautical aspects.

  • Università degli Studi di Padova: The university provides academic research and development support, ensuring the project’s scientific rigor.

  • University of Rijeka: Collaborating with its Italian counterpart, this institution fosters educational exchanges and research initiatives.

Crafting Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Itineraries

The project’s core objective is to develop sustainable tourism products that highlight the Adriatic’s natural beauty and historical significance. By creating itineraries that traverse forests, waterways, lagoons, and coastal areas, TOFOLA aims to diversify tourist flows, reduce seasonal pressures, and promote inclusivity. These routes are designed to be accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and young people. (italy-croatia.eu)

Innovative Cross-Border Competition

In a bid to operationalize these itineraries, TOFOLA has launched the Open Cross-Border Competition. This initiative seeks a single candidate to test and manage one of the co-designed tourist products. The selected entity will undergo a three-month incubation program, encompassing 192 hours of mentoring, training on business models and sustainability, technical assistance, service validation, and communication support. This program is valued at €5,760 and is provided by Centro Consorzi. The competition is open to individuals and organizations, including SMEs, startups, social enterprises, creative and cultural operators, non-profit organizations, tourist consortia, and professionals, provided they are based or operate within the Interreg Italy-Croatia program area. A Call to Action

The deadline for submitting innovative management proposals is March 14, 2026, at 12:00 PM. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a European pilot action that promotes open innovation, responsible tourism, and cross-border cooperation in the Adriatic region. By embracing the TOFOLA project, stakeholders have the chance to contribute to a sustainable and inclusive tourism model that honors the Adriatic’s rich heritage while paving the way for future generations to experience its unique landscapes and cultures.
