Michelin has unveiled its latest innovation in racing tyres, the Power Cup S, which made its debut at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This new tyre is currently not available for public purchase.
The Power Cup S tyres were spotted on Team Picnic-PostNL’s bikes ahead of the race’s first stage, distinguished by the new ‘S’ marking on the sidewalls. A team mechanic revealed to BikeRadar that these tyres are “faster” than the existing Power Cup Competition TLR model. The enhanced performance is attributed to a smoother central compound that reduces rolling resistance and a grippier compound on the shoulders for improved cornering.
The tread design has also been subtly modified, potentially enhancing both aerodynamics and grip. Underneath, the tyre’s construction has been adjusted, though specific details remain undisclosed. While the current Power Cup Competition TLR features a 3×120 TPI (threads per inch) casing, it’s possible that Michelin has increased the thread count to enhance suppleness. Additionally, a material change is plausible, considering that high TPI cotton casings are used by brands like Vittoria and Specialized in their racing tyres. Michelin may have also reduced the number of layers, similar to Continental’s approach with its GP5000 TT TR tyre compared to the S TR all-round race tyre.
Regarding time trial-specific tyres, Team Picnic-PostNL is collaborating with Michelin on a new model. While the exact release date is yet to be confirmed, the team is aiming to have it ready for the opening stage of the 2026 Tour de France in Barcelona, which is a team time trial.
The Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, formerly known as the Critérium du Dauphiné, is taking place from June 7 to June 14, 2026. The race comprises eight stages, covering a total distance of 1,208 kilometres. The first stage, starting on June 7, features a hilly route from Vizille to Saint-Ismier, spanning 146.2 kilometres.
