Marin’s Bold Return: Introducing the All-New TAM!

by VeloMagster

Marin Bikes, a pioneer in mountain biking since the 1980s, has re-entered the cross-country (XC) scene with the introduction of the TAM series. This new lineup pays homage to Mount Tamalpais, the iconic peak that inspired the sport’s inception in Marin County, California.

The Marin TAM Series

The TAM series is designed to blend the agility of a cross-country racer with the versatility of a trail bike. Featuring 29-inch wheels and a suspension setup of 130mm front and 120mm rear travel, these bikes are equipped to handle both competitive racing and everyday trail adventures. The frame geometry includes a 65° head tube angle and a 76° seat tube angle, providing a stable yet responsive ride. The longer reach and 435mm chainstays contribute to a traditional XC feel, while the modern angles enhance stability.

Innovative Suspension Design

Departing from their previous MultiTrac suspension system, Marin has adopted the Isotrac Flexstay Suspension for the TAM series. This design reduces weight by eliminating additional pivots and bearings, offering a simpler and more efficient suspension system. The suspension is tuned to deliver a balanced leverage rate, ensuring consistent performance from race tracks to casual rides. The TAM’s anti-squat is set at 124% at sag, with anti-rise just under 100%, optimizing pedaling efficiency and braking stability.

Frame Construction and Features

The TAM frames are constructed from hydroformed Series 4 aluminum, allowing for strategic weight reduction without compromising strength. Key areas like the seat tube and pivots are engineered for minimal weight, while the yoke-free seat stays maximize power transfer and reduce heel interference. The frame includes a threaded 73mm BSA bottom bracket, Boost 148×12 rear spacing, and internal cable routing, maintaining a clean aesthetic and reducing maintenance needs. Notably, all frame sizes accommodate two water bottles within the front triangle, catering to long-distance riders.

Model Lineup and Pricing

Marin offers the TAM series in three models, each tailored to different rider preferences and budgets:

  • TAM XR: Priced at $5,499, this top-tier model features a Fox Performance Elite 34 SL fork (130mm), a Float SL shock, a Shimano Deore Di2 electronic drivetrain, SRAM Motive Silver brakes, and a PNW Loam dropper post. It rides on WTB KOM Light i30 wheels shod with Maxxis Recon Race tires.

  • TAM 2: At $3,399, the TAM 2 offers a Fox Performance 34 fork (130mm), a Float shock, a Shimano Deore 12-speed groupset with 4-piston brakes, and Marin’s in-house rims paired with Maxxis Recon Race tires. This model is positioned as a competitive build for enthusiasts.
