London Cyclist Deaths Plummet to Historic Low

by VeloMagster

In 2025, London recorded its second-lowest number of cyclist fatalities, with six deaths on the capital’s roads. This figure matches the number from 2020 and is surpassed only by the five fatalities in 2019. Notably, the total number of road fatalities in London decreased by 13% from 110 in 2024 to 96 in 2025. Despite this encouraging trend, the number of serious injuries among cyclists is on the rise. In the first nine months of 2025, there was a 14% year-on-year increase in serious injuries to all cyclists, up from 773 in 2024 to 878 in 2025. Transport for London (TfL) continues to invest in infrastructure to enhance cyclist safety. In 2024/25, TfL expanded its cycleway network by 35 km through the introduction of new Cycleways, aiming to provide safer routes for cyclists across the city. In response to the increasing use of e-bikes, which now account for a significant proportion of cycling-related injuries, TfL has implemented measures to address safety concerns. This includes the introduction of new traffic lights in Regent’s Park to enhance pedestrian safety, following several incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians. While the reduction in cyclist fatalities is a positive development, the rise in serious injuries and the challenges posed by e-scooter collisions underscore the need for continued efforts to improve road safety for all users. Ongoing investment in infrastructure, enforcement of safety regulations, and public education campaigns are essential to ensure that cycling remains a safe and viable mode of transport in London.
