Faction Bike Studio, renowned for its innovative approach to cycling design, has unveiled the Atlas, a groundbreaking gravel bike featuring 32-inch wheels. This prototype serves as a testing platform to evaluate the impact of oversized wheels on real-world performance, geometry, and integration challenges in drop-bar bicycles.
Innovative Design and Engineering
The Atlas addresses several technical challenges associated with larger wheel sizes. To counteract the increased axle-to-crown height inherent in 32-inch wheels, engineers have incorporated a -35 degree stem. This design choice maintains a low front stack, preserving rider aerodynamics and comfort. The frame accommodates 2.1-inch tires while achieving 435mm chainstays, demonstrating that larger wheels can coexist with relatively short rear-end geometry to maintain handling responsiveness.
Componentry and Specifications
The Atlas is equipped with a TRP/Classified Vistar Powershift drivetrain, featuring a 46T Classified chainring. It rides on Easton 32-inch carbon rims, a notable development as Easton enters the 32-inch wheel market. Schwalbe 32-inch x 50mm G-One RX PRO tires provide ample traction across diverse terrains. Additional components include an EC70 Aero handlebar, Wolftooth headset and T47 bottom bracket, Fizik Vento Antares R1 Adaptive saddle, and titanium bottle cages.
Industry Implications and Future Prospects
The introduction of the Atlas aligns with a broader industry trend towards larger wheel sizes in gravel cycling. The 32-inch wheel format offers advantages such as improved obstacle rollover, enhanced traction, and a smoother ride quality on rough terrains. However, challenges remain, including the need for compatible components and frame designs. The Atlas serves as a valuable testbed for exploring these possibilities, with potential applications in cross-country, trail, and gravel disciplines.
While Faction Bike Studio is primarily an independent product development studio specializing in bringing concepts to production-ready solutions, the Atlas prototype has garnered attention within the cycling community. It will be showcased at the Sea Otter Classic at the Tektro/TRP booth, offering enthusiasts a firsthand look at this innovative design.
