From Rome to La Spezia: Lessons from Our First Cycling Journey
In the summer of 2020, amidst pandemic-induced travel restrictions, my then-girlfriend and I sought an alternative to traditional vacations. We decided to embark on our inaugural cycling adventure, choosing to traverse the distance from Rome, where we resided, to La Spezia, her hometown.
Planning the Route
Our journey commenced on August 8th, with a week-long itinerary that prioritized enjoyment over athletic performance. We aimed to avoid heavy traffic by selecting secondary roads and nature trails, allowing us to explore Italian villages and landscapes that would have remained unseen by car or train.
The Itinerary and a Notable Misstep
Our planned route included stops in Sutri, Canino, Montiano, Punta Ala, Cecina, and Pisa. This path was designed to showcase the diverse beauty of Italy at a leisurely pace. However, we encountered an unexpected challenge: a booking error for a bed and breakfast in Montiano. We had reserved accommodation in Montiano, Forlì-Cesena, located on the opposite side of the Apennines, instead of Montiano, Grosseto, which was along our route. Fortunately, the local community was exceptionally helpful, assisting us in finding alternative lodging and preventing us from having to cycle additional kilometers in search of accommodation during the peak of summer.
Insights from Our First Cycling Experience
This journey taught us to appreciate life’s simple pleasures. After hours of cycling in 40°C heat, we learned to value:
- A fresh water fountain for a quick refreshment.
- A shaded pine grove to rest during the hottest hours.
- A sandwich from a local shop enjoyed on a park bench.
Cycling also taught us adaptability. We had to monitor the weather, verify our route, manage a flat tire, or reroute if a planned path was closed. In essence, it was a lesson in handling life’s unforeseen events: not everything goes as planned, but often, it’s our response that makes the experience memorable.
Arrival and Reflections
Upon reaching La Spezia, we felt immense satisfaction. Our friends were incredulous, and our families, who had been anxious throughout, believed we had been reckless. For us, however, it was a breath of fresh air after months of lockdown and an experience that would bond us forever.
Our passion for cycling grew so much that, in subsequent years, we organized many similar trips, both in Italy and abroad, becoming more experienced and even incorporating camping into our adventures. Yet, our first cycling journey from Rome to La Spezia remains uniquely special.
Even as time passes and many things have changed since then, the memory of that effort and the freedom we felt is still vivid.
To our next cycling adventure.
