Empowering Owners: Taking Control with DST

by VeloMagster

In the ever-evolving bicycle industry, accurate and consistent product information is paramount. Recognizing this, the Dutch Sustainable Technology Foundation (DST) has recently implemented significant changes to empower brand owners with greater control over their product data.

Addressing Data Redundancy

Historically, multiple suppliers often listed identical products, leading to duplicate or inconsistent information within the DST platform. This redundancy made it challenging to determine the authoritative source of product details, resulting in increased efforts to verify and correct data. To mitigate this, DST has restructured its platform, granting brand owners the authority to set conditions on how their product data is submitted and managed. This includes controlling the acceptance of products not directly managed by the brand owner, overseeing translations, and specifying which fields distributors are permitted to complete.

Streamlining Collaboration

Despite these adjustments, suppliers and distributors can continue to provide product information. However, all submissions must now adhere to the guidelines established by the brand owner. This approach ensures that collaboration within the supply chain remains intact while maintaining uniformity and verifiability of product data. Submitted data undergoes validation at two levels: first, against the DST standard, and second, based on any additional requirements set by the brand owner. This dual validation enhances clarity regarding ownership, responsibility, and data quality throughout the supply chain.

Enhancing Data Quality

Remco Tekstra, Chairman of the Board at DST, emphasized the importance of this initiative:

“With this adjustment, we place control over product data where it belongs: with the brand owner themselves. This ensures that everyone in the chain, from supplier to retailer, can rely on accurate and up-to-date information, marking a significant step forward in data quality.”

Benefits Across the Supply Chain

This strategic move offers several advantages:

  • Brand Owners: Enhanced control and influence over the quality of data used by their distributors.

  • Distributors: Access to reliable product data directly from the brand owner.

  • Retailers: Experience greater consistency in product information across various distributors.

By implementing these changes, DST is not only improving data accuracy but also fostering a more efficient and trustworthy environment for all stakeholders in the bicycle industry.
