Exploring the Dutch Coast Overnighter: A Premier Bikepacking Adventure

Embark on a captivating journey along the Dutch coastline, where diverse landscapes—from dense forests and expansive dunes to vibrant flower fields and serene beaches—await. This meticulously crafted route offers an immersive experience, blending natural beauty with cultural landmarks, all within a short distance from Amsterdam.

Route Overview

The Dutch Coast Overnighter seamlessly integrates various terrains, including:

  • Schoorl Dunes Singletrack: Renowned for its exceptional flow, this trail winds through the highest dunes in the Netherlands, providing a thrilling ride for mountain biking enthusiasts.

  • Beach Riding: Experience the unique Dutch subculture of beach racing, featuring specialized bikes designed for swift sand navigation.

  • Flower Fields: From April to mid-May, pedal through expansive tulip and hyacinth fields, offering picturesque views and a burst of color.

  • Historical Sites: Discover remnants from World War II, including concrete bunkers and traditional windmills, each narrating a piece of history.

  • Island Exploration: Cross the Wadden Sea to Texel Island, known for its unique ecosystem, pine forests, and pristine coastal tracks.

Route Difficulty

The route is rated a 4 out of 10, balancing technical challenges with accessible logistics. While the Schoorl singletrack presents steep descents, roots, and loose sand, these sections are manageable even with a loaded bike. The physical demand varies based on beach conditions and wind, with sand’s high rolling resistance and dune climbs adding to the effort. However, the route’s proximity to towns ensures easy access to water, food, and transportation, making resupply straightforward.

Route Development

The Dutch Coast Overnighter utilizes the NH100 for its southern section, scouted by professional riders Laurens ten Dam and Niki Terpstra. Special thanks to PWN for granting access to their area for bike riding. MTB Noordwest maintains the Schoorl trails, and Wielersport Texel oversees the segments on Texel Island. Riders can access these tracks for free but are encouraged to support trail maintenance by donating via the QR code on the trail signs.

Must Know

  • What Bike: The route is approximately 95% rideable for most cyclists. Any bike equipped with 45mm+ tires will handle the terrain well, though expect a few short hike-a-bike moments on the first day due to the steep drops and punchy climbs on the Schoorl singletrack.

  • When to Go: While the weather in the Netherlands is a factor, local access regulations will dictate your schedule.

    • Time of the Day: The first leg of the route (KM 2.5 to 26.5) passes through the protected Noordhollands Duinreservaat. Cycling is strictly limited to the window between sunrise and 10:30 AM. You must start by 09:00 AM at the latest to clear the PWN Nature Reserve before 10:30 AM. To ride here, you must also carry a digital PWN Dune Card (€2), which can be purchased online.

    • Period of the Year:

      • Winter Season (Oct 1 – May 1): This is your best window for riding the full route.

      • Summer Season (May 1 – Oct 1): Despite the better weather, the full route is restricted as the beach section (KM 48–60) is closed to cyclists during the day. You can still complete the ride by using the paved detour (see trail notes).
