Yellowstone Bison Attacks SUV Amidst Mating Season

In the bustling weeks of Yellowstone National Park’s annual bison rut, a recent incident has underscored the unpredictable nature of these majestic creatures. On July 20, 2026, a bull bison, typically seen grazing peacefully, charged at a vehicle navigating through the park’s congested traffic.

The confrontation occurred when a driver attempted to maneuver through a line of halted cars. As the vehicle edged forward, the bison, which had been ambling along the roadside, took offense and charged, puncturing the tire with its horn.

This event highlights a critical safety lesson: even animals that appear calm can react swiftly if they feel threatened. Earlier this month, a bison attacked a 65-year-old man, tossing him eight feet into the air. In June, a 12-year-old was injured near Mud Volcano and transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The bull involved in the recent incident was in Hayden Valley, a central area of the park where large numbers of bison gather during the late summer mating season. During this period, mature bulls compete for mates and defend their personal space more aggressively than at other times of the year.

Witnesses noted that the bison was simply “doing bison things” and could have become more aggressive. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife to prevent such encounters.

Park officials advise visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison and other wildlife. If an animal moves closer, it’s crucial to back away to maintain a safe distance. Approaching or remaining near wildlife within any distance that disturbs or displaces the animal is illegal.

As the bison rut continues, visitors are reminded to exercise caution and respect the park’s wildlife, ensuring a safe experience for all.
