KIMBO Aluminum Truck Camper 2022 > United StatesKumo Cycles’ Overlander Prototype: A Masterpiece for Australia’s Rugged Terrain
In the heart of Braidwood, Australia, Keith Marshall, the sole craftsman behind Kumo Cycles, has unveiled the Overlander prototype—a bicycle engineered to conquer the most challenging Australian landscapes. This creation is a testament to Kumo’s commitment to precision and innovation in frame building.
Genesis of the Overlander
The Overlander’s inception traces back to 2017, during a ride through the Tantangara Wilderness in Kosciuszko National Park. A mishap involving a stick damaging the rear derailleur prompted Marshall to envision a touring bike tailored for Australia’s rugged terrains. The result is a machine that seamlessly blends mountain bike geometry with touring capabilities.
Design and Specifications
The Overlander boasts a Pinion gearbox, offering a wide gear range with minimal maintenance. A dropper post enhances control over varied terrains, while the rigid fork ensures durability and responsiveness. The frame accommodates 29 x 2.4″ tires, providing stability and traction on diverse surfaces.
Aesthetic and Custom Features
Marshall’s attention to detail is evident in the Overlander’s aesthetics. The bronze-to-off-white fade paint job, executed in-house, features a subtle splatter effect on the off-white sections. Complementing this are Simworks bronze Standalone rims, Bubbly pedals, and a custom Sinewave bronze light, all meticulously chosen to match the frame’s color scheme. The internal dynamo routing, custom fork, distinctive stem, and matching bottle cage further underscore the bike’s bespoke nature.
Performance and Future Plans
Marshall plans to test the Overlander prototype on the Hunt 1000 and the Attack of the Buns route in Southern Australia, as well as other local adventures. The bike is equipped with a dynamo hub, Growtac Equal brakes, and Teravail Camrock tires, ensuring reliability and performance in demanding conditions.
