FFWD, the renowned Dutch wheel manufacturer, has unveiled its latest innovation in gravel cycling: the RAW Control and RAW Pace wheelsets. These new additions seamlessly blend the durability of gravel-specific rims with the advanced technology of their road counterparts, offering cyclists a high-performance solution for diverse terrains.
Design and Construction
The RAW Control and RAW Pace wheelsets are engineered with a focus on speed and responsiveness. Both feature rims inspired by FFWD’s DRIFT series, optimized for gravel riding with an internal width of 28 millimeters, accommodating tires ranging from 38 to 60 millimeters. This design ensures stability and control across various surfaces.
A standout feature of these wheelsets is the incorporation of carbon spokes, a technology previously exclusive to FFWD’s road wheels. These carbon spokes not only reduce weight but also enhance stiffness, resulting in a more direct and responsive riding experience. In the event of damage, individual spokes can be replaced by a qualified technician, maintaining the wheel’s integrity and performance.
The hubs are equipped with CeramicSpeed bearings, known for their smoothness and durability. FFWD emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, especially for off-road use, to preserve performance and extend the lifespan of the bearings.
Model Specifications
The RAW Control features a 36-millimeter rim depth, catering to riders who prioritize lightweight performance, comfort, and control—ideal for gravel races with significant elevation gains, ultra-races, or bikepacking adventures. In contrast, the RAW Pace boasts a 48-millimeter rim depth, emphasizing speed, stiffness, and aerodynamics, aligning with the demands of modern aero-gravel bikes.
