Exploring Calabria’s Anello del Lago Cecita: A 107 km Cycling Adventure
Calabria, located in the southern tip of Italy, offers cyclists a diverse and captivating landscape. One of its most enchanting routes is the Anello del Lago Cecita, a 107 km loop that showcases the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Starting Point: Acri
Our journey begins in Acri, a town nestled in the heart of Calabria. Departing at 9:00 AM, we set off towards the Sila Greca region, renowned for its lush forests and serene lakes.
The Route
The route meanders through the Sila Greca, characterized by its emerald chestnut woods and winding roads. As we ascend to elevations around 1,000 meters, the Ionian Sea comes into view, its calm waters reflecting the clear sky.
Varrise and the Sila Greca
In Varrise, we pause to refresh at a local fountain. The gentle breeze whispers through the trees, and the scent of blooming broom fills the air. Continuing past Cava di Melis, a charming village in the municipality of Longobucco, we encounter a brief descent that quickly transitions into a challenging climb, testing our endurance.
Approaching Lago Cecita
After navigating the ascent, the dense spruce forests open up, revealing the northern shore of Lago Cecita. This area evokes the ambiance of the Old Wild West, with grazing cows, rustic agriturismos, and tractors tilling the land. The sun is high, but the persistent breeze keeps the temperature comfortable.
Scenic Villages and Cultural Landmarks
The route takes us through evocatively named locales such as Colamauci, Macchia Cosentino, Scalzati-Purgatorio, Salerni, and Lagarò-Lupinacci. At a crossroads, a sign directs us to the San Francesco chestnut tree, a 400-year-old giant believed to have been planted by Saint Francis of Paola himself.
Rhythm of the Ride
The journey is a harmonious blend of cycling and music. With John Denver’s “Country Roads” playing, we focus on the joy of the ride, leaving behind concerns about speed or time. The beauty of cycling is that it allows us to explore the wonders near home without the need for exotic destinations.
Moccone and the Sila Peaks
As we approach the straightaway leading into the dense larch pine forest of Moccone, Lago Cecita unfolds behind us, nestled among mountains and hills. Ahead, the three highest peaks of the Sila—Monte Scuro, Monte Curcio, and the majestic Monte Botte Donato (1,930 meters)—stand tall.
Camigliatello Silano and the Return Journey
A brief stop in Camigliatello Silano, the undisputed capital of Calabrian mountain tourism, provides a moment of respite. After a light snack, we continue our journey, passing by the southern shore of the lake. A photo opportunity on one of the many “terraces” offers a moment to capture the landscape. The return leg is a delightful descent, with the scent of blooming broom and resinous pines accompanying us.
Reflections
As we pedal, thoughts of poetry and the landscapes that have always brought happiness fill our minds. The Sila, with its mountains and the people who inhabit them, continues to inspire awe and wonder, as it has every time.
