Bike Together: Safe Streets for Families in Brussels!

Kidical Mass Brussels 2026

On Sunday, May 10, 2026, Brussels will once again be transformed into a vibrant sea of bicycles as the city hosts the annual Big (Inter)national Kidical Mass. This family-friendly cycling parade aims to send a clear message: cities must become safer and more accessible for children on bikes.

Organised by Kidical Mass Belgium, the event brings together families from across the country to the heart of Brussels. The approximately five-kilometre route, starting at Place du Trône and ending at Brussels Park, underscores a central theme: children deserve a rightful place in traffic. (kidicalmass.be)

Despite the growing popularity of cycling in Brussels, children remain notably scarce on the streets. According to the Brussels Bicycle Observatory, children currently represent only 1.3% of all cyclists. While this figure shows a slight increase, the organisation argues that infrastructure remains insufficiently adapted to allow children to cycle independently and safely.

Simultaneously, the use of family-oriented bicycles is clearly on the rise. Today, approximately 22% of bicycles in Brussels are equipped to transport children. Longtails, cargo bikes, and bike trailers are particularly gaining popularity. Kidical Mass believes this trend demonstrates that families are indeed choosing the bike, but public spaces are still not adequately designed for children.

The organisation therefore calls for more physically separated bike lanes, safer school environments, and stricter enforcement of existing 30 km/h zones. According to the initiators, a child-friendly city is ultimately more comfortable and safer for everyone.

Kidical Mass, which began in 2020, has since grown into an international movement with local groups in Belgium, Europe, and beyond. In Belgium, the initiative quickly gained traction, with active chapters in Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia, and more than a hundred volunteers.

In addition to its social character, the event remains deliberately accessible and festive. The parade traditionally attracts many families with decorated bikes, cargo bikes, and children’s bicycles. At Brussels Park, entertainment and activities for children are provided.

Participation is free, and prior registration is not required.
