SPECIALIZED GRAVEL SERIES LIMBURG 2026 “Liberation rides” – Crossborder CyclingAbels Bikes: Celebrating 30 Years of Pedalling Excellence in Heuvelland
Nestled in the picturesque Heuvelland region of South Limburg, Abels Bikes is commemorating its 30th anniversary this year. Over the past three decades, the bicycle industry has undergone significant transformations—from the rise of high-tech e-bikes to the shift from handwritten receipts to digital service portals. Through it all, Abels Bikes has evolved with the times while maintaining its commitment to personalized service.
A Humble Beginning
The journey began three decades ago when Rob Beaumont’s father-in-law and mother-in-law opened a modest shop in the heart of Gulpen. Rob’s father-in-law, a dedicated bicycle mechanic, handled repairs and sales, while his mother-in-law balanced selling clothing and accessories with her home responsibilities. Later, she transitioned to working full-time in the shop. They managed every aspect themselves: purchasing, administration, repairs, and sales. This hands-on approach laid the foundation for the store’s enduring success.
Embracing the Future
Ten years ago, Rob Beaumont joined the family business, bringing with him a wealth of experience from the sports world. Despite lacking a background in the bicycle industry, his passion for sports and commerce drove him to take the next step alongside his father-in-law. Together, they crafted a clear vision for the company’s future: to make the bicycle the primary mode of transportation in Heuvelland. This mission aligns perfectly with the region’s compact nature, short distances, and the health, sustainability, and enjoyment that cycling offers. Moreover, it addresses issues like traffic congestion and parking problems.
A Store That ‘Breathes’ Heuvelland
The current location in Gulpen, which opened nearly nine years ago, has transformed into a distinctive concept within the bicycle industry. Upon entering, visitors are immediately struck by the store’s design, which is entirely inspired by the Limburg landscape. Topographical lines from maps flow through the interior, references to marl caves are evident throughout, and even the store’s names are in Limburgish dialect. A close friend, a landscape architect, contributed to this unique design, ensuring the store resonates with the local environment.
A Year of Celebrations
To mark its 30th anniversary, Abels Bikes is hosting a series of events throughout the year. Each month features activities such as discount promotions, product launches, test days, and cycling cafés. Recently, a cycling café was held with former professional cyclists Léon van Vliet and Marc Lotz, drawing numerous cycling enthusiasts and sparking engaging conversations about the sport.
Engaging the Community
The store also organizes popular e-bike and gravel days, attracting many visitors to Gulpen. Rob believes in proactive engagement, stating, “I think you shouldn’t wait for people to come to you. You need to organize events that entice them to come here.” Last year, a mountain bike test day was organized with a Tyrolean theme, complete with lederhosen, bratwursts, and large beer mugs. Participants could test e-mountain bikes while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
Adapting to Industry Changes
The bicycle industry has seen shifts not only in product offerings but also in entrepreneurship. Rob notes, “In the past, you did business with representatives who just came by. Now everything is digital and online.” While this digitalization may seem less personal, it has significantly increased efficiency.
Investing in People
Finding skilled personnel remains a challenge in the industry. However, Abels Bikes has managed to attract young mechanics and salespeople by offering a modern work environment with the latest products. Rob emphasizes the importance of investing in training and flexibility, stating, “Good people are harder to find than good customers.”
Looking Ahead
Abels Bikes shows no signs of slowing down. The store continues to grow and is exploring expansion opportunities. Rob concludes, “I find it beautiful to keep developing. The industry changes rapidly, and we want to keep up with that.” Over the past ten years, the store has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, and this momentum is set to continue in the coming years.
