Decathlon SIMOND MT900 2P: A Comprehensive Review

In the realm of bikepacking, where ultralight tents often command premium prices, the Decathlon SIMOND MT900 2P emerges as a compelling alternative. Priced at approximately €250, this tent offers a blend of affordability and functionality that warrants a closer examination.

Design and Setup

The MT900 2P features a freestanding dome-style design, utilizing a single, interconnected pole structure. This configuration ensures a swift and intuitive setup, even for those new to camping. The tent’s dimensions—200 cm in length, 105-120 cm in width, and 105 cm in height—provide ample space for two occupants, though taller individuals might find the width slightly restrictive.

Materials and Construction

Constructed with a 20D polyester flysheet boasting a 2,000 mm hydrostatic head and a 40D polyamide groundsheet rated at 3,000 mm, the MT900 2P demonstrates commendable waterproofing capabilities. Seams are sealed with heat-sealed strips, enhancing its resistance to the elements. However, it’s advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as the lightweight fabrics can be sensitive to UV rays, which may degrade their durability over time.

Weight and Portability

Weighing in at 1.93 kg, the MT900 2P is relatively lightweight for a two-person tent. Its packed size of approximately 40 x 14 x 14 cm allows for convenient storage and transport, making it suitable for bikepacking adventures. The tent’s components can be disassembled, enabling users to distribute the weight among multiple riders if desired.

Interior Space and Storage

The tent’s interior offers a bedroom length of 225 cm and a width of 125 cm at the head and 105 cm at the feet, accommodating two sleeping mats comfortably. Two vestibules provide additional storage space, each capable of housing a 50-60 liter backpack and a pair of hiking boots. The inclusion of vestibule floors is a notable feature, protecting gear from moisture and dirt. Inside, four pockets—two near the head area and two ceiling pockets—offer storage solutions, though the absence of a large overhead helmet net is a minor drawback.

Ventilation and Weather Resistance

Ventilation is facilitated by two roof vents and large mesh panels between the raised bathtub floor and the flysheet, promoting excellent air circulation and effective moisture management. The tent has been tested to withstand wind speeds up to 70 km/h and has passed tropical rain tests (200 L/m²/h for 3 hours), indicating robust weather resistance. However, in colder, windier conditions, the tent may feel less sheltered compared to more enclosed models.

Conclusion

The Decathlon SIMOND MT900 2P stands out as a budget-friendly option for bikepackers seeking a reliable shelter without compromising on essential features. Its straightforward design, ease of setup, and practical storage solutions make it a worthy consideration for both novice and experienced cyclists. While it may not match the ultralight credentials of higher-end models, its value proposition is undeniable for those prioritizing functionality and affordability.
