On July 19, 2026, a tragic rockfall on Mount Rainier’s Disappointment Cleaver route resulted in the death of climber Daihong Chen, 44, from Bellevue, Washington, and injuries to three others. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at approximately 11,600 feet, as two unguided climbing groups totaling six climbers were ascending toward the summit. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Chen’s death due to multiple blunt-force injuries.
