Snel van A naar B? | BoechoutBonob: The Belgian Bike That Grows with Your Child

In the heart of Belgium’s Brabant Wallon region, a visionary duo has reimagined the children’s bicycle. Their mission? To craft a single bike that evolves with a child’s journey from their first steps to their initial pedal strokes. Enter Bonob: (bonob.bike)

The Genesis of Bonob

Jean-Philippe, an engineer and seasoned custom frame builder known for VOORDE Cycles, embarked on this project for his son, Lucas. Observing Lucas’s growth and learning phases, Jean-Philippe recognized a gap in the market: instead of adapting children to various bikes, why not design a bike that adapts to the child? This insight led to the creation of Bonob. (bonob.bike)

A Three-Stage Evolution

Bonob’s design is ingeniously modular, guiding children through three pivotal stages:

  1.

Tricycle Phase: A low, stable tricycle that introduces toddlers to movement and autonomy.

  2.

Balance Bike Phase: Transitioning to a two-wheeled balance bike, children naturally develop their sense of balance and confidence.

  3.

Pedal Bike Phase: Finally, with the addition of pedals and brakes, the bike becomes a full-fledged pedal bike, ready for more adventurous rides.

Each transformation is straightforward, requiring only an Allen key, ensuring ease for parents without mechanical expertise. (bonob.bike)

    Engineering Excellence

The Bonob frame combines aluminum tubes with reinforced connectors, allowing for three distinct geometries to accommodate a child’s growth. The saddle height adjusts from approximately 28 cm to 45 cm, and the steering geometry shifts to offer increased stability for beginners and enhanced maneuverability as confidence builds. Remarkably, the pedal bike version weighs just 4 kg, addressing the common challenge of heavy bikes hindering young learners. (bonob.bike)

    Sustainable and Practical Design

Prioritizing sustainability, Bonob bikes are designed and assembled in Belgium, emphasizing durable materials and European suppliers. The belt-driven transmission eliminates grease stains, and the hydraulic disc brakes are tailored for small hands. Components are selected for their resistance to corrosion and longevity, ensuring the bike remains a cherished companion for years. (bonob.bike)

    Conclusion

Bonob stands as a testament to thoughtful design and engineering, offering a versatile solution for families seeking a single bike to accompany their child’s growth and learning journey. Its adaptability, combined with a commitment to quality and sustainability, makes it a standout choice in the realm of children’s bicycles.
