Revelate Designs, a pioneer in bikepacking gear, has introduced the Hammerhead Harness, a significant advancement in handlebar storage solutions. Building upon their legacy of durable and innovative products, this harness offers a refined design tailored for the modern adventurer.

Design and Construction

The Hammerhead Harness features a robust construction combining carbon tubes with machined aluminum brackets. A distinctive Hypalon hammock suspends the dry bag between the two bars, ensuring stability and easy access. This design not only secures the load but also maintains compatibility with Revelate’s existing handlebar pockets, enhancing versatility.

Mounting System

Equipped with custom-made webbing straps, the harness offers a secure attachment to the handlebars. The straps, slightly thicker and grippier than traditional webbing, feature sewn loops that slide directly onto the carbon bars, preventing movement during rides. Locking cam buckles further ensure the dry bag remains firmly in place, even on rough terrains.

Hardware and Load Capacity

The harness utilizes CNC-machined 6061 aluminum clamps with a bottom-heavy asymmetric orientation, positioning the payload just under the bars and close to the head tube. This design optimizes load distribution and minimizes interference with the bike’s suspension. The Hammerhead Harness is rated for a maximum load of 8 pounds (3.6 kg), accommodating various gear configurations.

Additional Features

An accessory bar is included, allowing attachment of GPS units, lights, or other accessories. This feature positions the accessory approximately 3 inches above the dry bag, reducing the risk of bag shadowing. The harness also includes rubber grommets to prevent mounting bolts from falling out when the harness is removed, showcasing attention to detail in design.

Comparison with Competitors

When compared to similar products, the Hammerhead Harness stands out in several areas:

Weight: At 335 grams (11.8 oz) without the accessory bar, it offers a balance between durability and weight.

Material: The combination of carbon, aluminum, Hypalon, and webbing ensures a lightweight yet sturdy build.

Load Capacity: With a maximum load of 3.6 kg (8 pounds), it accommodates a wide range of gear.

Adjustability: The harness fits both 31.8mm and 35mm handlebars, providing flexibility for different bike setups.

Accessories: The inclusion of an accessory bar adds value for riders needing additional mounting options.

Conclusion

The Revelate Designs Hammerhead Harness exemplifies the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality. Its thoughtful design, durable materials, and user-friendly features make it a valuable addition to any bikepacking setup. Whether embarking on a weekend adventure or a cross-country expedition, the Hammerhead Harness offers a reliable and efficient solution for handlebar storage needs.
