In France, the use of high-visibility vests by cyclists is governed by specific regulations designed to enhance safety on the roads. As of June 2026, these rules are as follows:

When is the High-Visibility Vest Mandatory?

Cyclists are required to wear a high-visibility vest in the following situations:

Who Must Wear the Vest?

The obligation applies to both the cyclist and any passenger on the bicycle. This means that if you’re riding with a child or another adult outside urban areas during the specified conditions, they must also wear a high-visibility vest. (service-public.gouv.fr)

What Are the Specifications for the Vest?

The high-visibility vest must meet certain standards:

Certification: It should be CE-marked, indicating compliance with European safety standards.

Color: While commonly yellow, the law does not mandate a specific color. The vest can be fluorescent yellow or orange. (service-public.gouv.fr)

Design: The vest must be worn on the upper body, from the waist to the shoulders, to ensure visibility to other road users. (legifrance.gouv.fr)

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failure to adhere to this regulation can result in a fine:

Additional Considerations

While the high-visibility vest is not mandatory within urban areas, it is still recommended to enhance safety. Additionally, cyclists are advised to equip their bicycles with functional lighting and reflectors, as these are mandatory for night riding or in low-visibility conditions. (service-public.gouv.fr)

By adhering to these regulations, cyclists can significantly improve their visibility and safety on the roads.
