The Genesis of World Bicycle Day

The initiative for World Bicycle Day originated from Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish sociologist and former national cyclist. In 2015, he published a blog post titled “Cycling Is Everyone’s Business,” advocating for the bicycle’s role in societal development. By 2016, Sibilski intensified his campaign, questioning the absence of a global day dedicated to cycling. His efforts culminated in the United Nations General Assembly’s unanimous adoption of Resolution A/RES/72/272 on April 12, 2018, officially designating June 3 as World Bicycle Day.
