In May 2022, the Full Circle Everest Expedition made history as the first all-Black team to summit Mount Everest. Led by Philip Henderson, the team comprised nine climbers, including Manoah Ainuu, Fred Campbell, Abby Dione, James Kagambi, Thomas Moore, Demond Mullins, Rosemary Saal, and Eddie Taylor. Their achievement nearly doubled the number of Black climbers who had previously reached the summit, highlighting the expedition’s significance in promoting diversity within the mountaineering community. Following the expedition, Henderson has been dedicated to sharing the team’s story to inspire future generations. He has traveled extensively, speaking at schools, outdoor clubs, and community events, emphasizing the message that the outdoors is a space for everyone, regardless of background. Henderson’s outreach aims to encourage marginalized communities, particularly Black and Brown individuals, to explore outdoor activities and see themselves as leaders in these spaces. In addition to his speaking engagements, Henderson has initiated the Full Circle Rural Gear Repair project. Operating from his workshop in Cortez, Colorado, he repairs and refurbishes old or broken outdoor gear, donating it to nonprofits that provide equipment to those in need. This initiative not only promotes sustainability by reducing waste but also ensures that individuals from underserved communities have access to quality outdoor equipment. Henderson’s efforts reflect his commitment to making the outdoors more accessible and inclusive for all. (rei.com)

Through these endeavors, Henderson continues to build upon the legacy of the Full Circle Everest Expedition, fostering a more inclusive and diverse outdoor community.
