Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest, passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 97 in Port Townsend, Washington. (washingtonpost.com) His historic ascent in 1963, alongside Sherpa Nawang Gombu, not only marked a significant milestone in mountaineering but also ignited widespread interest in the sport across the United States.

Born on February 10, 1929, in Seattle, Washington, Whittaker developed a passion for the outdoors early in life. He and his twin brother, Lou, were active members of the Boy Scouts, which fostered their love for climbing in the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. By the age of 16, both brothers had joined Seattle’s Mountaineers Club, setting the foundation for their future in mountaineering. (washingtonpost.com)

After completing his studies at Seattle University, Whittaker began his climbing career in earnest. In 1955, he became the first full-time employee of Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), a company that would later become a cornerstone of the outdoor retail industry. His leadership and vision were instrumental in expanding REI’s reach and influence. Beyond his professional achievements, Whittaker was deeply committed to environmental conservation. He played a pivotal role in establishing several national parks in the Pacific Northwest, including North Cascades National Park and Redwood National Park. His advocacy efforts have left an enduring legacy in the region’s natural preservation. (washingtonpost.com)

Whittaker’s personal life was equally remarkable. He shared a close friendship with Senator Robert F. Kennedy, whom he guided on a 1965 expedition to Mount Kennedy in the Canadian Yukon. This bond extended beyond climbing, with Whittaker serving as Kennedy’s campaign manager during the 1968 presidential election. (washingtonpost.com)

In 1990, Whittaker led the Everest International Peace Climb, uniting climbers from the United States, Soviet Union, and China in a shared ascent. This event not only showcased his leadership but also his belief in the unifying power of mountaineering. (washingtonpost.com)

Whittaker’s contributions to mountaineering, environmental conservation, and international diplomacy have left an indelible mark on the world. His passing at 97 marks the end of an era for American climbing, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
