However, a recent bikepacking journey revealed a spectrum of unexpected hues, transforming the island into a canvas of diverse colours and textures.

Day 1: Baptism by Fire and Water (Playa Honda – Órzola – La Graciosa)

Setting off from Playa Honda, the morning was marked by a brilliant azure sky, a stark contrast to the anticipated monochrome landscape. The initial off-road trails wound through craters, where the golden yellow of lichens and the resilient green of local flora painted the terrain. The reddish-brown earth blended seamlessly with the golden sands, dispelling the notion of a colourless island.

The coastal ride towards Teguise showcased stark contrasts: the pristine white of traditional Canarian architecture against the deepening blues of the Atlantic Ocean. However, the hidden adversary, the wind, made its presence felt with gusts nearing 50 km/h as we approached Órzola.

A short ferry ride took us to La Graciosa, where the pale grey, almost white, dirt tracks felt like gliding over fresh snow. The day’s exertions were rewarded with a fresh seafood dinner and a starlit sky, offering a serene end to our first day.

Day 2: Chromatic Peaks and Manrique’s Eye (Órzola – Caleta de Famara)

An early start led us into the island’s interior, where fields of blooming aloe vera painted the landscape with intense yellows and oranges. The challenging off-road ascents were dotted with unexpected splashes of purple from wildflowers.

Reaching the Mirador del Río, we were greeted by César Manrique’s architectural masterpiece, offering panoramic views of La Graciosa. The journey continued southward to Haría and the historic town of Teguise. Descending towards the surfers’ haven of Caleta de Famara, we celebrated the day’s ride with a hearty meal at a local “teleclub,” where authentic Canarian cuisine and volcanic white wine provided a fitting conclusion.

Day 3: The Volcano’s Challenge and the Fury of the Wind (Caleta de Famara – Playa Blanca)

This day immersed us in Lanzarote’s primordial geology. Cycling through the Timanfaya National Park, the vast lava fields presented a stark, lunar landscape. Unintentionally, my polka-dotted socks added a touch of whimsy to the otherwise monochromatic surroundings.

The volcanoes displayed dual faces: grey on one side, adorned with vibrant yellow and green lichens on the other. After navigating the Montañas del Fuego, the wind intensified, with gusts reaching 60 km/h. To muffle the deafening roar, I fashioned makeshift earplugs from tissue paper.

The day’s finale was marked by the white sands and turquoise waters of Playa Blanca, followed by the untamed beauty of Playa Papagayo.

Day 4: Resilience, La Geria, and the Desert’s Cry (Playa Blanca – Mancha Blanca)

The fourth day promised challenging segments with S3 difficulty ratings. Instead, it unfolded as a surreal environment of dust and technical trails. Towards Femés, low-hanging clouds brought unexpected rain, transporting us momentarily to an Amazonian setting—the true “Cry of the Desert”.

Dried by the sun in twenty minutes, we entered the iconic wine valley of La Geria. Here, thousands of half-moon-shaped stone walls (zocos) protected the vines, creating a unique morphology. It was the pinnacle of contrasts: the tenacious green of life emerging from the black of ash.

Day 5: The Triumph of Life and the Epilogue of Colours (Mancha Blanca – Playa Honda)

We ventured into the area of Montaña Colorada, where the island transformed into a volcanic botanical garden with shades of green and orange. The emotional peak arrived at Montaña de las Lapas (or del Cuervo). We ventured on foot into the mouth of its crater: at the center of that basin of extinguished fire, life thrived with small yellow plants. The return along the serene and flat coast led us back to Playa Honda, where it all began.

Conclusion: The Unpredictable Reality

Bikepacking taught me that nothing can surprise you like the unpredictable reality you experience while pedaling. Lanzarote is not monochromatic: it is a palette of black, red, silver, and pure white. It was the slowness of the bike, the struggle against the wind, and the surprise of rain that revealed its true colours. And for this, it will be an unforgettable journey.

[Your Name]

Discover more travel stories at the Cycling Tourism Fair

If this account has inspired you, don’t miss the next Cycling Tourism Fair 2026, which will be held in Padua from March 27 to 29: there you will find stories, experiences, destinations, and practical advice to organize your next cycling holiday.

Source link

Lanzarote: A Cyclist’s Odyssey Through the Island’s Vibrant Palette By [Your Name] Lanzarote, the easternmost…

[1

post-3538","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

<meta name="description" content="Lanzarote: A Cyclist's Odyssey Through the Island's Vibrant Palette By [Your Name] Lanzarote, the easternmost of Spain's Canary Islands, is often perceived as a land of volcanic austerity, dominated by shades of black, grey, and brown.
