Giro Montaro Pro: A Comprehensive Review

Giro’s Montaro Pro helmet, introduced in mid-August 2026, has swiftly become a standout in the mountain biking community. Positioned as the flagship half-shell helmet in Giro’s lineup, it succeeds the Manifest Spherical, bringing with it a host of enhancements and a design evolution that aligns more closely with the Montaro III.

Design and Aesthetics

The Montaro Pro showcases a bold, angular design that not only enhances its visual appeal but also improves aerodynamics. Its sleek profile is complemented by a matte finish, available in various color schemes to cater to diverse rider preferences.

Fit and Comfort

Giro has long been lauded for its helmet fit, and the Montaro Pro is no exception. Tailored for riders with average to oval-shaped heads, it offers a snug yet comfortable fit. The RocLoc Trail Air adjustment system provides three stages of height adjustment, ensuring a personalized fit. The plush padding across the brow and crown adds to the comfort, making extended rides more enjoyable.

Protection

Safety is paramount, and the Montaro Pro excels in this domain. It features the Mips Spherical design, where the helmet’s inner and outer shells move independently to reduce rotational forces during an impact. This dual-shell system enhances protection without compromising comfort. Additionally, the helmet is NTA-8776 e-bike certified, ensuring it meets the rigorous standards for e-mountain biking.

Ventilation

Equipped with 23 Wind Tunnel Vents, the Montaro Pro offers commendable airflow. While the internal channels are relatively shallow compared to some competitors, the helmet effectively channels air from front to back, keeping the rider cool during intense rides.

Eyewear Storage

For riders who prefer to stash their sunglasses during climbs or breaks, the Montaro Pro provides dedicated eyewear storage. Two strategically placed vents on the brow allow for secure placement of sunglass arms, ensuring they stay in place even on rugged terrains.

Visor

The helmet features a two-position adjustable visor. In its high position, it accommodates goggle storage, while the low position offers minimal obstruction to the rider’s field of view. However, during low-angle sun conditions, the visor’s effectiveness in blocking sunlight diminishes, requiring riders to adjust their head position for optimal sun protection.

Weight

Weighing in at 465 grams for a medium size, the Montaro Pro is on par with other high-end helmets in its category. Its balanced weight distribution ensures that it remains comfortable throughout extended rides.

Conclusion

The Giro Montaro Pro stands as a testament to Giro’s commitment to innovation and rider safety. With its advanced protective features, comfortable fit, and thoughtful design elements, it caters to both traditional mountain bikers and e-mountain biking enthusiasts. While the visor’s performance in low-light conditions could see improvement, the Montaro Pro remains a top contender for those seeking a high-quality mountain bike helmet.
