National Parks Look To Lock Out Wild Ginseng Diggers : NPRGinseng Poaching in the Great Smoky Mountains: A Growing Concern

In late September 2026, rangers at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) intercepted two individuals illegally harvesting ginseng roots within the park’s boundaries. One suspect was found with 167 poached roots, while the other had 521 roots, collectively weighing approximately eight pounds. This incident underscores the escalating issue of ginseng poaching in the region. (actionnews5.com)

The Value and Vulnerability of Ginseng

Ginseng, particularly the American variety (Panax quinquefolius), is a slow-growing perennial that can take seven to ten years to mature and produce seeds. Some plants can live for over 75 years. Its roots are highly prized in traditional medicine, especially in East Asia, where they are believed to possess various health benefits. This demand has led to the plant being dubbed “green gold.” (actionnews5.com)

Ecological and Legal Implications

The illegal harvesting of ginseng poses significant threats to the park’s ecosystem. Removing these plants disrupts delicate habitats, deprives wildlife of essential food sources, and diminishes genetic diversity. Such actions are not only ecologically damaging but also illegal. Collecting or possessing ginseng within GSMNP can result in fines up to $5,000 and/or imprisonment for up to six months. (actionnews5.com)

Conservation Efforts and Public Involvement

In response to these challenges, park officials have initiated replanting efforts for the recovered roots. However, historical data indicates that only about one-third of replanted ginseng roots survive. To bolster conservation efforts, the National Park Service (NPS) encourages visitors to report any observed poaching activities. Individuals can contact GSMNP Dispatch at 865-436-1230 to report such incidents. (actionnews5.com)

Conclusion

The poaching of ginseng in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a pressing issue that threatens both the park’s natural heritage and the broader ecological balance. Through increased public awareness, stricter enforcement of regulations, and collaborative conservation efforts, there is hope to preserve this valuable plant species for future generations.
